Looking for the best of Provence and Coast of Southern France!!
Hi Friends:I am now in Aix-en-Provence for a couple of days and then will move to some ideal beach location for 3 days.
Can you tell me what you think the best beaches/most romantic coastal towns are
And, What are the most scenic and beautiful drives and towns in provence as i want to start out today and aimlessly drive through beauty with no destination at all photographing the fine scenery and enjoy loads of music on my car CD player.
Thanks so much in advance for this.
Best,
Craig

Aimlessly driving to Roussillon is IMO the biggest adventure. Some more suggestions about nice roads in previous threads. But arbitrarian.
Best music in the Aspilles-scenery (Maussane - St.Rémy and Maussane - Les Baux) IMO is Rage against the machine or Coldplay.
Best light for photographing: St. Rémy-en-Provence, researched for us by Vincent van Gogh.

My vote is for Cassis. Poster regards is insider, wait for her/him.

Very good tip from arizona concerning V; Gogh and his research for light and colours. Same was the motivation for Cézanne in Aix and Gigou in the Vaucluse, Matisse in Vence during the 2nd WW, Signac in St. Tropez, Léger and his cubism, Y. Klein in Nice like the backgrounds for R. Dufy. I am not a photographer but can imagine people like the above can inspire you too. What is the best in Provence? Sorry but I have no idea about what is the best for you. Looking for great, scenic and rare places can be the Grand canyon (the valley of the river Verdon), the large wine fields in this part of the country, old villages all arround and maybe panoramas down from the near Alps, old castles in Brignols, Gréoux les Bains, Allemagne en Provence (yes, it's the real name of this village but nobody there knows why), Entrecasteaux?
Beaches along the French Riviera are not so funny as you find in the part of the Camargue with hundrets of km sand, without hordes of tourists and all your surrounding can be just nature. At fisrt go to Arles and search the little but very goos departemental roads (yellow signs) like No D36 + D 36b what brings you also to the wild life of the natural reserve and down south to the beach of Arles after Salind de Girauld. More south-west also from Arles dont miss for pictures the little privat train in a place called Mejanes on a short dead end of the D37.and finally from the D85 some hundret of meters before the 'Bac Sauvage' if you turn right you come to the end of the world here after a place called le Grand Radeau. The street is ending here but the rest you can walk to one empty beach where a great moment is watching the waves and the brids in the air (well, also without your music from your CD's it is great).

Hm... I would recommend Luberon region for wandering. Or Alpilles. I loved driving up to Cap Canaille too.As for the beaches, I wasn't all that impressed. Yes, there are a lot of sandy beaches in and around Camargue, but I preferred tiny beaches in Calanque d'En-Vau next to Cassis. Cassis is probably the best choice for romantic coastal town in the nearby area.

#3 - it seems you know this part of France very well . Why you forgot to tell that it is a walking distance 50min to go and 1 h20 back to the parking up on the road..
