Cefalexin and penicillin allergies??

I am currently in the north of Luzon,Philippines and have a nasty chest cold (as does half the population at the moment). I went to the doctor to get something for it as it hasn't budged in 2.5wks and I am feeling pretty terrible.

He has given me Cefalexin 500mg tabs with instructions to take 1tab 3x daily. Is this ok to take if you have mild Penecillin allergy?

he also gave me carbocisteine 500mg - 1 tab 2x daily once again - is this ok given my allergy?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

To be honest, you never can tell exactly how you'll react to a drug until you take it. Did you tell him about your allergies? Based on http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a682733.html you might need to have a discussion with the doctor.

This looks OK based on the NHS site, but again, you'll have to try it to see how you do. Perhaps try taking the 2 pills an hour or two apart on the first day so you can tell if you are having an immediate reaction to one or the other.

Cefalexin doesn't contain penicillin, drugs containing penicillin usually end on --cillin, the carbocistein is to loosen the mucos in your bronchia so you can breath easier, if you'll have a reaction nobody knows, if in doubt ask your doctor, those drugs shouldn't provoke a allergic reaction if you're only allergic to penicillin.

Thanks for the advice/help guys.

If you are interested in the verdict I had dengue fever, not a chest infection. Two of my colleagues have had it also. No amount of antibotics was going to sort me out but it was interesting the local hospital didn't even think to test me for it.

Feeling better now, having had a couple of weeks of complete rest. I didn't take the antibiotics, which was probably a good thing.
