Weekend Getaway from Edinburgh! Ideas??Hey,
I've got a 3 day weekend coming up in Sept and I'm trying to sort out somewhere to go. My partner and I live in Edinburgh and have seen most of Scotland so we are hoping to spend a weekend somewhere in England. Is there anywhere within a 3-4hr drive radius of Edinburgh that would be worth a weekend visit?
Ideally no big cities, and somewhere with lots of different sights to see. We have a car so can base ourselves in one area and have a look around.
I was looking at maybe Whitby, what do you think?

1According to the AA planner, Whitby is more than 4 hours away. Try the Lake District.

Have you been to South Lakes?
I'm talking Windermere, Grasmere, Rydal, the Kirkstone Pass and a lot more.
From Edinburgh it's possibly a 3 hour drive, maybe a bit less....
Whitby is lovely. Even more so on a very windy day, but I prefer Cumbria.
Just a few pointers from me.
Hope you have a great weekend.

National Park http://www.northumberlandnationalpark.org.uk/visiting
Loads of small towns, the best bits of Hardrians Wall, castles galore, and empty, endless sandy beaches. http://www.visitnorthumberland.com/

5Anywhere in Northumberland / Northumbria / along Hadrian's Wall (except far east end if you want to avoid Tyneside conurbation).
Having done Marine Biology at Newcastle University, I'd particularly recommend coastal areas eg Lindisfarne / Holy Island; St Mary's Island, Whitley Bay - make sure you consult tide tables bafore setting off, as both are reached by causeways. Tynemouth is also nice, with a Priory / Castle, Sunday market in Victorian era Metro station, beaches, cliff top walks, cafes, good fish & chips etc, Cullercoats has beach, tasteful seaside attractions, Marine Lab (not open to public, though) - you wouldn't think you were so close to centre of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Like anywhere in UK, I wouldn't travel without a waterproof jacket, but might not need it...
