Diving in Western Samoa

I've been told the diving in Western Samoa is fantastic. Has anyone done that/been there? Any info would be gratefully received. Is Easter time a good time to go (Easter 2013, probably). If not, what is a good time of year? Any recommendations regarding trustworthy companies to use? Thanks!!

Hi, I went diving in Western Samoa last year in March, and it was a little disappointing to me! I went diving on the island of Savai'i (one of the two major islands, the other being 'Upolu, which is the island you arrive on), and there was quite a bit of damage from tsunamis. I didn't go diving on 'Upolu, but the snorkelling off the beach at Lalomanu wasn't great either - a lot of damage from the recent tsunami that completely wiped out that area a few years ago.

However, I went at a time when the moon was full, but it was also incredibly close to the Earth that year, so the tides were really extreme, and that meant the visibility was pretty poor when I went. Saying that though, the weather was fantastic the whole 8 days I was in Samoa, and also the dive company I went with was excellent - I think they're called 'Dive Savai'i' - I booked last minute for the following day, and even though I was the only one who wanted to go, they still took me out regardless, so I had a great private day diving for no extra cost! The couple who run it are really friendly and knowledgable, and I had a great day out in spite of the average diving. I did see a turtle, but there weren't a huge amount of fish, although there is a cool little electric flame scallop hanging out at one of the sites!

So, all in all, I wouldn't say the diving is fantastic, but could still be worth giving a shot if you want to, as you may have better luck with visibility than I did, and the reef recovers more each year. I hope you have a great time regardless!
