Halal finger food for Sudanese
My name is Holly, I have started volunteering with Sudanese refugees in Portland Maine. One of the women brought in Sudanese donuts for everyone. They were wonderful and of course I raved about them. So now there are more donuts coming next week. I wasn't trying to get them to cook for me. I was only saying how tasting they were.Anyway... I would like to bring something to share with them. I'd like to make something so that even those that are Muslim (Halal) can enjoy.
Any suggestions for finger food.

You might try asking your questions on the Get Stuffed Branch as well.Do you want things that don't need refrigeration? Do you want things that would be familiar to them, or would you like to treat them to western food? I'll bet it would be easy to make halal chocolate chip cookies. Omit vanilla or other extracts with alcohol.
Google tells me that there are a number of halal markets in Portland. There is halal chocolate & the markets probably carry it.

as posted above, its the thought that counts most. bring whatever you like, are familiar preparing, or is a local speciality, as long as it as its halal, so- if with meat, no pig, and from a halal butcher
- without alcohol
- and also no shrimps (or other sea fruit / even though in my experience, this seems to be a quite "flexible" rule)
i think that you can bring anything (that it is fine to eat for muslims) and it will be very much appreciated. its really mostly about hospitality and about "thoughts of the heart".
maybe bagels with cream cheese would be nice ? something "american" and i guess something most people like.

nathalie, you may not be aware that, although bagels and cream cheese are eaten by a lot of Americans of all types, the combination is usually considered as being Jewish, especially when smoked salmon is added. This might not be the best food to serve Muslims whose background and sensibilities you are unfamiliar with.

Bless you, beecharmer! You are already doing your bit, like someone else wrote, Vege samosas are a good start, I've been served them at many an invite to Sudanese homes! Not really 'finger food' but I think salata aswad and fuul would be good to serve with bread. Both are easy to make and very Sudanese!itchyfeetify
