Halal finger food for Sudanese

My name is Holly, I have started volunteering with Sudanese refugees in Portland Maine. One of the women brought in Sudanese donuts for everyone. They were wonderful and of course I raved about them. So now there are more donuts coming next week. I wasn't trying to get them to cook for me. I was only saying how tasting they were.
Anyway... I would like to bring something to share with them. I'd like to make something so that even those that are Muslim (Halal) can enjoy.
Any suggestions for finger food.

Cheese straws, onion bharjees, samosas (veg or lamb/chicken), mixed pickles on sticks.............., anything veggie. Indian food is perfect, even Western food if you find a local Halal butcher (if you have Muslims you have at least one butcher).

You might try asking your questions on the Get Stuffed Branch as well.

Do you want things that don't need refrigeration? Do you want things that would be familiar to them, or would you like to treat them to western food? I'll bet it would be easy to make halal chocolate chip cookies. Omit vanilla or other extracts with alcohol.

Google tells me that there are a number of halal markets in Portland. There is halal chocolate & the markets probably carry it.

And to add, anything you do will be well appreciated as your thoughtfulness is held in high esteem by myself for one. Anything with sugar in spades has an even chance of being well thought off but really, Its the thought that counts. More Americans like you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers.

Something else that occurred to me--sugar cookies cut in shapes & sprinkled with colored sugar. Wouldn't recommend the Christmasy stuff like Santa or an angel, but why not stars, hearts, diamonds, or flowers?

Good point. Make them in the shape of bin liners and use licorice to colour them.

as posted above, its the thought that counts most. bring whatever you like, are familiar preparing, or is a local speciality, as long as it as its halal, so
  • if with meat, no pig, and from a halal butcher
  • without alcohol
  • and also no shrimps (or other sea fruit / even though in my experience, this seems to be a quite "flexible" rule)

i think that you can bring anything (that it is fine to eat for muslims) and it will be very much appreciated. its really mostly about hospitality and about "thoughts of the heart".

maybe bagels with cream cheese would be nice ? something "american" and i guess something most people like.

nathalie, you may not be aware that, although bagels and cream cheese are eaten by a lot of Americans of all types, the combination is usually considered as being Jewish, especially when smoked salmon is added.

This might not be the best food to serve Muslims whose background and sensibilities you are unfamiliar with.

thanks nutraxfornerves, you are right, bagels with cream cheese are probably considered mostly jewish, but they are halal. my boyfriend is a muslim, and i have travelled to places like pakistan, so i'm not exactly a "non knower".

Bless you, beecharmer! You are already doing your bit, like someone else wrote, Vege samosas are a good start, I've been served them at many an invite to Sudanese homes! Not really 'finger food' but I think salata aswad and fuul would be good to serve with bread. Both are easy to make and very Sudanese!

1)Avoid Alcohol and Pork products and any thing that contain such ingredients.
2)If you want to serve meat or chicken, It has to be slaughtered.
3)All other products are OK (fish, veggies, fruits and cereal).

I would hope so.

Unless you mean that the animal must be slaughtered in accordance with halal procedures, which is why other posters suggested finding a halal butcher.
