Which island?Looking to travel for a long weekend (4-5 days) in early November, but can't decide which island to visit.
I generally like history and nature, not really into relaxing on beaches or nightlife. I also want to get around without a car.
I initially thought of Dominica or St. Martin. Any opinions on these as destinations?
Any alternative suggestions? (outside the US and territories)
(Btw, been to Bermuda.)

1Dominica is great from the nature standpoint -- one of the best islands for hiking and diving -- though not big on historical sights to visit and no really great beaches. St. Maarten would probably be utterly disappointing for you ... one of the most touristy islands, horrible traffic, good beaches, not many other sights. One of my least favorite islands.
The first thing that popped into my mind given your preferences was Dominican Republic. It's probably the most historic island in the Caribbean and Santo Domingo lays claim to many "first in the Americas" types of records. In fact, I believe that Santo Domingo is the oldest city in the Americas founded by Europeans (or something like that). DR is a very big island, so you can find most of what you are looking somewhere on the island. The Semana peninsula has some of the world's best whale watching, you can do lots of good hiking, etc. plus it does have some excellent beaches. It can also be one of the most reasonably priced islands in the Caribbean.
Another island that comes to mind is St. Lucia. You can do a search on this thread and find several recent postings listing things to see and do in St. Lucia.

3@mgtraveler (#1): DR isn't an island. Hispaniola is the name of the island that comprises most of the territory of the DR and Haiti.
OP: Sorry for the off-topic.

7I was also thinking about Grenada as it's easy to explore by bus. There are a handful of factories to check out - nutmeg, cocoa, rum. There is hiking and if I recall a fish fry on Friday nights?

8Grenada fits the bill but the biggest problem if you are coming from the U.S. is that it's hard to get good flight options to and from there, or at least that has been my experience. The flights are both time consuming and relatively expensive, although the same could be said about flying to Dominica as well.

9I looked into Saint Lucia. It's an expensive flight or a two day trip to get there. I think I'll pass this time.
