July is the rainy season in Thailand and it can be torrential at times. That said, it does not necessarily rain all day every day. In my experience, you still can be get warm sunny days but mid-afternoon, early evening, the clouds will burst and it can rain very heavily for several hours at a time.

We took our son (then 7) to Vietnam last year and had a wonderful time, although we went in Jan, when it is cooler and dry. Highlights included Hoi An (a great walking town, family friendly) with beaches close by. We also liked Nha Trang. Our son particularly enjoyed the waterslide park on an island nearby which is reached by cable car. We spolit ourselves for a few days and stayed at Phu Quoc Island, a short flight from Saigon, which was relaxing and had safe beaches (no waves) for kids. Vietnam is pretty kid friendly all round, just beware the traffic!

Southern India also has its monsoon at that time, and it would be a bad time to visit with kids. The risk of disease is always much higher then (dengue, sometimes outbreaks of malaria, typhoid, hepatitis, and also the less serious food and water-borne problems). It would be especially stressful traveling with toddlers who tend to put everything in their mouth. As said above, it is also raining in Thailand, which will limit what you can do, but at least it is cleaner. Not sure about Vietnam, but I'd look for places which don't have their monsoon (such as places further east - Bali, Lombok?).

thanks for your answers! In Bali we spend 3 great month with two kids few years ago. So now we are looking for a new experience.
I think India is because of the risk of disease and the monsoon out of our mind.
Is there everywhere rainseason at this time (june-july) in thailand? Has anybody an experience about large rooms/ bungalows for 7 of us (a 18 year old friend is comming with us)? Will it be easyer (and cheaper) to find something in Thailand or Vietnam? We are quite basic in standard. Is it generally more expensive to travel through Thailand or Vietnam (or same) and spend the time?

Thailand is a very easy country to be in. I lived in Vietnam and would much rather go to Thailand. The VN govt. is very controlling about where tourists can visit so the path is very touristy and well travelled. The beaches in VN are bot the great either. The best ones in VN being in the South. However- Thailand is much more relaxed and easier to be in. I love the South and the North and think both could be great for kids. In the North- Chaing Mai and Pai are super well travelled but really nice places. In the South - there are a bunch of islands from the very touristy Ko Samui and Phuket, to a bit less touristy ones. I think that the east coast and west coast in the south have a different rainy season with the West Coast- Adaman side- getting more rain. So Koh Pha Ngan might be nice. I avoid the touristy Full Moon beaches but the other beaches are really nice. I have three kids and would easily take them to Thailand for a 6 week journey. We are actually planning on being there for 3 months this year.

Have spent much of the past 8 months travelling with four children - including to VN - and would opt for Thailand. Have you checked airbnb.com for accommodation options?
