Planning a month and need help

My wife and I are planning a month traveling in Germany, Austria, and Italy. We want to start and end in Berlin and spend several days there. Travel to smaller towns as we make our way to Munich, then to Salzburg, Vienna, northern Italy (Tuscany/Umbria). If anyone has information that would help us draw out our itinerary we would greatly appreciate it. Our desire is to see more of the culture than tourist sights (but still some sights). Any information will be gladly considered.

It would help to know when you are travelling, and would you consider flying one way. Is there any possibility of you having an open jaw ticket (eg. fly into Berlin, return home from Rome) or is there are a reason for returning to your starting point? How far south in Italy do you want to visit - as far as Rome? And do you want to include some rural areas or are you happy to restrict yourselves to towns large and small? Sorry for so many questions, but you've got a lot to pack in to a month, so just looking to narrow down the options.

In that case, on the way from Munich to Salzburg, you could visit Prien on Lake Chiemsee and ferry over to the spectacular folly of Herrenchiemsee Palace and on your way back, visit the neighbouring island of Fraueninsel...also, the impressive fortress town of Burghausen gets few foreign tourists...

Between Salzburg and Vienna, the obvious stop is in pretty Hallstatt but Wels is also worth a look and Krems makes a good base to explore the Wachau Valley and its attractions along the Danube...
