avoiding using a car in Vieques and Culebra
HiMy friend and I have booked my trip to PR in Oct but I wll staying a bit longer and just fancied chilling on a decent beach and Vieques/Culebra seem to fit the bill. Planning on just flying over form San Juan and biking about to beaches places of interest during the day.
It seems PR just doesnt have a proper bus system like the rest of Latin america where you can get by using local transport
I really don't want the hassle of hiring a car and am quite hapy exploring different beaches by bike. I am a reasonably fit guy so happy to sweat a little to get around the islands.
Question is which is the better place/more manegable to get around by bike/walking or should I just stay in one place on the mainland?
Any tips/anecdotes/advice welcome.
Peace

in mainland, hire a car make sense if you want to explore outside San Juan. go to the mountain to taste some pork, and go to el yunque national park,or some cave to the west.in Culebra, it seems everyone go to Flamenco beach, and I saw people hire jeep. For me, i just take taxi, and spend days and night around Flamenco beach...

Thanks for the adviceWe do plan on hiring a car on the mainland but will probably just get a bike on Culebra and cycle about to investigate other beaches.
Are there bars on Flamenco beach open at night or do you head into Dewey for bars?

Hi, I went to Vieques this year with out a car. We stayed in the main tourist town of Esperanza and I thought it was quite doable with out a car. There are quite a few completely undeveloped beaches that you can walk to within 15 min- 2 hours of esperanza. This is really all you need. As the first beach down the coast from Esperanza is in my opinion the nicest on teh island. Also, If you wish to go to another beach a little farther away you can take a taxi which we did. Round trip was 30 dollars and the taxi driver was super nice, going out of her way to take us to a stand that sold coconuts on teh way home. A car cost at least 45 dollars a day so we saved money there.4
Good morning,Culebra is a 3 x 7 mile island, which is generally hot & hilly (not mountainous). All things are relative as we once had some very fit guests coming from a cold, flat place who thought the biking was really difficult. Having said this, it is certainly possible, doable, & enjoyable, to bike around Culebra.
There are kiosks at Flamenco beach, but generally they are not open in the evenings. Town (Dewey) would be the spot for bars/restaurants.
