Tica bus station in San Salvador
I will be arriving in San Salvador from Managua and lonely planet talks about the bus arriving at the Hotel San Carlos in the city centre. What I would like to know is - does the bus stop at the San Benito area where we were looking to stay at the Hotel Meson de Maria. I would be grateful for any information on the bus stops and the hotel. Thanks

Happy to help another traveller! I took this trip several years ago. I can't reference the Hotel Meson de Maria, but I can speak of the San Carlos Hotel at the Ticabus terminal. The rooms are tiny and the service is indifferent, so stay there at most one night only. Their Coffeeshop is a Big Ripoff! The next day, transfer to the nearby Hotel Villa Florencia CENTRO at 3a Calle Poniente. Prices are affordable, accomodations are okay, and it is walking distance from many great tourist areas. Be careful you DO NOT wind up at the similarly named Hotel Villa Florencia ZONA ROSA, which is many blocks away and much more expensive. Must see places? Museo de la Palabra y Imagen, Mercado Ex Cuartel the army barracks-turned-public market to buy souvenirs, Museo de Arte MARTE. Travel tips? Bring a hotplate and hotpot to do your own cooking sometimes. You can buy food at the supermarket, cheaper than relying on restaurants. Remember, you'll be paying for everything in DOLLARS, as El Salvador dollarized in 2001. Get ahold of the most current Lonely Planet El Salvador Travel Guide if you haven't already. Research the tourist things you want to do on the internet thoroughly BEFORE you leave, as you'll be too enthralled by the surroundings to think as clearly when you are there. DON'T go out at night-the gang situation is still rough. Above all, enjoy! El Salvador is a country with a convoluted and tragic history, but an inspiring one also. It is well worth visiting. Don't forget to eat pupusas washed down with Kolashampan!
