New York sport augustI am travelling with my boyfriend to Colombia from London via New York for 4 days from August 16th.
I have never been before...there are soooo many questions to ask but I am going to start with.....
Sport! While there I want to take my boyfriend to a sport event for his birthday as a surprise, but have no idea what or how to go about this. He loves all sport but particularly rugby and cricket, so thought baseball or american football would be pretty cool, are either of these in season? I would love to go to a basketball match but from a brief googling session, it doesn't look like this starts till later?
Please can someone advice me on what to go see, where to buy tickets, how to get to stadiums etc?!!!
Also wondering if there are any festivals or outdoor music/theatre/film events going on around this time in the city?

2August is prime baseball season.
Look at the websites of the NY Yankees and the New York Mets to see if there will be games when you are there. You can buy tickets on the web sites as well. Don't worry about understanding the game. Tell the people sitting around you that it's your first game and you'll get more information that you ever wanted. Buy a couple of beers and you'll be set for life. Just be sure to find out which team your new friends are supporting, so you cheer for the right team
read mrpenney's FAQ on American sports for more information on seasons and locations.

3You're a little early for football. However, "preseason" starts tomorrow and carries on into early September, meaning you CAN catch a game if you want. However, the game is essentially practice, with star players often sitting out or at most, playing 1/4 of the game, and the quality and style of play is not usually the most exciting. But it's still football.
You'll apparently be in town for a preseason meeting between New York's two teams, the Jets and Giants. Given that the game is between both New York teams, tickets may be hard to come by (though since it's preseason, I don't know for sure). You can try looking for tickets on the teams' websites, or on Stubhub.
