Which volcano to visit in Indonesia

Hi;
Me and my husband (32 years old) will be in Indonesia between Sep 2nd-15th.
We will visit Jogyakarta-Bali and Komodo (may be Kalimantan if we have enough time).
We want to climb an active volcano, but could not decided which one would be easier, cheaper and interesting to take photos.
Will 1 night and 1 day be enough?
How can we reach?
Waiting for your advise.
PS: I am not a good climber, just climbed once in Turkey-Aladaglar from altitude of 2.000 to 3.300mt in 5 hours and promised that I will never climb again :)

You could visit Mount Merapi near Yogjakarta or Mount Bromo south of Surabaya.

Travelers visiting Flores mostly enter via Labuanbajo. Visit Komodo or Rinca island and do the 3-4-5 days trip to Maumere and fly back to Bali. I read that you are interested in visiting a working vulcano. Well look no further.

When I was in Maumere in June this year my driver August told me he went hiking with some German geologists up and around mount Egon near Maumere earlier this year. They even climbed down the crater of mount Egon. It is only a small hour drive away from Maumere. Sea World Club, Lena House or Ankermi are even closer to mount Egon. It is not Kelimutu where you are practically dumped on the lip of the volcano by a bus or car. Or Bromo where you climb up the 800 steps to the lip of the volcano. I myself was at the foot of mount Egon with August (November -2008) planning to make the trip. According to the local guide it is a 4 hour walk and that we would be back at around noon. But these local Florenese are like mountain goats (I know because my family is from Hokor, Bola). I turned back after I realized that we had to walk up and down these steep gorges. I was not in a good condition and I have walked up and down similar gorges in the hills around Hokor, near Sikka (near mount Egon). I have met tourist who have done this hike to mount Egonso it can be done easily if you are in fit condition.

You can snorkel in front of the beaches of Sea World Club (SWC). Or arrange a boat to drop you on the nearby islands Pulau Babi to snorkel. Do not forget to visit the area (Doreng beach) around Bola and Sikka.

You can easily spend a week in and around Maumere alone. From Maumere you can also visit the volcano Kelimutu. It is an overnight trip. If you do not want to go by private car just ask an ojak to drive you to Bola and the area around. I think that part of Flores has easily one of the more beautiful sceneries of Flores, but I am biased.

Check out the photo gallery by wera damianus of the area discussed in this post.

Forget my post bbtraveller. I overlooked your PS. "I am not a good climber, just climbed once in Turkey-Aladaglar from altitude of 2.000 to 3.300mt in 5 hours and promised that I will never climb again :)". Mount Egon is not an option for you. Although you van still see mount Kelimutu.

If you haven't got a lot of time and you are not a good climber then as far as I know the easiest for you to access would be Tangkuban Prahu just outside of Bandung. You will see boiling water coming up from fissures. It's hard to recommend sites for you as you don't like climbing.

In my opinion Mount Bromo is the most scenic volcano in Java and you can reach it by car.

If you're not a climber, I agree with Mike..Mt Bromo is quite spectacular as is Mount Ijen nearby (drive close to summit also), where you can descend to the fuming crater lake's edge, and witness how the poor sulphur miners have to make a living...if Mount Ijen is accessible at the moment?

Trekking on and around Merapi is a popular activity (at least when the volcano isn't spewing out hot gas and ash) From Selo, the nearest village on the north slope, it is 3 hr hike to the summit for the fit and healthy. For others it will take 4+ hr to climb, and nearly the same time to get back down again. Merapi Volcano close to Borobudur Temple.

The Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park is the main attraction in East Java and accounts for a large percentage of overseas tourists who visit the region. The national park is named after its two mountains, Mount Semeru (the highest in Java at 3,676 m, Mount Bromo. the most popular. The Tengger people inhabit this area. Mount Semeru also known as Mahameru (Indonesian language holy mountain or seat of the gods), is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes. Semeru is often closed due to its highly active nature.

There are many opportunities for trekking in the park to suite all levels of physical fitness. One of the most popular activities (especially for the less energetic!) is to stay in one of the simple lodges in the park, then drive up to the top of Mount Penanjakan (2,770 m) pre-dawn in a 4WD vehicle and wait for a truly spectacular sunrise. Later in the day, a slightly more arduous 90 min climb up to the rim of the Mount Bromo caldera to view the bubbling active crater is very worthwhile. You can also make this ascent seated atop one of the local ponies.

The Ijen Plateau near Banyuwangi and Bondowoso is a less well known but in its own way equally spectacular area of volcanic activity. The Ijen Plateau is the centrepoint of the large mountain range west of Banyuwangi and which abutts the Baluran National Park to the north. For the adventurous traveller a visit to the Ijen Crater (Kawah Ijen) is a must whilst in the region. The crater can be approached from Bondowoso in the west or Banyuwangi in the east. The Bondowoso route is recommended as the road is relatively better (although that is not saying much) and the 90 min foot climb much easier. When you arrive the colour of the water in the lake is scarcely believable being an extraordinary vivid aqua blue. Evidence of volcanic activity is everywhere with steaming water and brilliant yellow crystaline sulphur deposits. The Ijen Crater is one of the great natural wonders of Indonesia.

hi there,..this route that i suggest to you,..
first if you are from jogjakarta and then you want to visit mt bromo, maybe you can use this,..
from jogjakarta you can take a bus to surabaya, and the ticket price for the bus is Rp 35,000,- for the economic class and Rp 68,000,- for the executive bus (include one meal), then from surabaya you can change bus to Probolinggo and the ticket price is Rp 14,000,- for the economic class and Rp 23,000,- for the executive bus,...but be carefull because usually the bus crew will drop you to the tour agent near the bus station in probolinggo,...just say no to them and you should just walking to the parking place for the green minibus which parked beside the bus station in probolinggo,...and then you take that green minibus, the ticket price is Rp 25,000,- if they had 12-16 passenger, but if the passenger only 8 or 9 they will as you to pay Rp 50,000,- and after you arrived cemoro lawang,..you can find many hostel there,...and after finish with bromo,...you can back to probolinggo,...then my advice you should stay for one night more in probolinggo and find a hostel near train station,..because you should take train in the day after,..and the train schedule is at 5.00 am and will take you to ketapang banyuwangi ( The train name is "PROBOWANGI" and the ticket price is Rp 18,000,-) and after you arriving in the train station in ketapang banyuwangi you can take a walk to the harbour and then take ferry to go to gilimanuk in bali,...the you can easyly to find a bus and heading to denpasar,...ok i hope its useful for you,..and have a nice trip.....!

Thank you very much.
Most probably we will do the Bromo as royrabone and Ijen as One2 suggested.

Also I found there is Madakaripura Waterfalls near Bromo which is interesting for us as well.
Should we stay in Cemora Lawang also to be able to see waterfalls?

Hi there.
I'm Indonesian, local Probolinggo.

Yeah, Madakaripura waterfall is near mount Bromo, bout 25 km from Cemorolawang, but different way w/ Probolinggo city access.
It means all of public transport didn't across the road near Madakaripura.
U need 2 rent a car or get ojek 2 get there.
As Bromo n Prob problems, Madakaripura has problem 2, local people push u 2 get a guide there. But Madakaripura is awesome.
U can c this, http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=3046794908277&set=a.1036763938759.5726.1815314876&type=3

I suggest u 2 stay in Prob city, cheaper than hotel in Cemorolawang, but u have 2 rent the car 2 rush sun rise in Pananjakan view point. After visit Bromo u can get Madakaripura w/ the same car, it's easier than u get public transport but u need ojek then.

I got update about Mt. Merapi that "since mid of July, climbing till summit zone of Merapi is not allowed by local authority due to many loose volcanic rock on summit zone and avalanche potential. Climbing possibly allowed until elevation around 2400 m - 2700 m."
