How easy to spend 6 months per year in Vietnam
Not asking for detailed info, just a quick top-line answer to the question of visas for people that are interested in spending around 6 months per year in Vietnam. Not working, so no issue with work visa, just living there as a tourist for 6 months a year. I have a pretty good idea of what's required in Thailand and Cambodia, but not clear on Vietnam. Hopefully it's not as cumbersome as Thailand, requiring regular border runs etc. Any thoughts?1
My wife and daughter spent 6 months per year in Vietnam in 2010 and 2011.My wife is Vietnamese and doesn’t need a visa but my daughter does. My daughter got
VN visa exemption (Giay mien thi thuc) for the first 3 months then she had to buy a new visa for additional 3 months (Yes, a new visa stuck in her passport and not a visa extension) while she was in the country (in Hue city) for $15 dollars.
The point that I try to make here is that you can buy a new visa while staying in the country and no need to do a visa run.

you can get a 6 month visa probably tru the embassy in Ottawa, if they give you 1you can get a 3 month visa tru the embassy or tru the online system, then get another 3 month extension, this is easy as pie
if i remember right, you have adopted a child here, so you can ask for a family visa, to get your child to know his/her heritage, this may be a easy way to get a 6 month visa from the embassy

It is not easy to apply Vietnam tourist visa within 6 months. Normallly, Vietnam Immigration Department only approve 3 months tourist visa. It is applied for Canadian tourists as well as other citizens. But, after travelling in Vietnam 3 months, if you want to continue travel in Vietnam, you can ask for visa extension. That means you can last the time which you live in Vietnam.So, I suggest you apply for 3 months tourist visa first. You can apply online or at Embassy. It is up to you.

One very serious danger of staying out of Canada for 6 months or more is the risk of loosing all the social benefits that comes with the residence status.I don't know about the rest of Canada but here in Quebec you would loose the medical insurance along with many other benefits. Instead of being free, one day in hospital would then cost more than 3000$.
But I think that someone is allowed to stay more than 6 months once every 7 years.
Anyway, this is something to ckeck carfully before going out of the country for a long lenght of time

I don't really see your point.Anyhow I just say that this is something to check. 2 years ago I spend one month in a Montreal hospital after surgery. Maybe 150 000$ but free for me because I was allowed to this benefit (that you loose after 182 days spent outside of the country in a fiscal year.)

alaboux,what i meant is that only in quebec does your medical keep reissuing new cards to deal with the 6 month thing for them snowbirds,
the rest of canada get full time health cards ... i know many folks from western canada who go for long periods of time, up to 1 year and have no problems with health care coverage
