Travel to okinawa : miyako or ishigaki?Dear all,
I am traveling with my boyfriend to okinawa in september, but i can't decide whether i should visit miyako or ishigaki. friends recommended ishigaki, but on japan travel it says miyako has some of the best beaches in japan, and its ticket is cheaper.
could you give us some advice? also, could you recommend places to visit and cheap hotels?
Thanks a lot!!

1How many days do you have and what are your interests?
We went in September to Ishigaki/Taketomi/Iriomote and were hit by a pretty heavy typhoon, which caused transport disruptions and empty shops for a couple of days. So you might want to plan some spare days just in case if you haven't done already.
Apart from the snorekling on Ishigaki, I found the other two islands much more interesting and pretty, both for culture and nature. So if you are going to Ishigaki, I would highly recommend to visit Iriomote and Taketomi as well.
Haven't been to Miyako, so can't compare.

2Having been to both, I'd say it's a tough choice. It would probably depend on the length of your stay. For a relatively short visit, go to Miyako. Sunahama Beach is one of the nicest small beaches in Japan (great for both swimming and snorkeling), and the island can be easily toured in a rental car or on a scooter.
Ishigaki is larger, and probably the better choice for a longer trip. Yonehara Beach is arguably the best spot in Japan for snorkeling, and you can easily spend a couple of days touring the island on a scooter (I know I did!). Ishigaki is also the jumping off point for visits to Taketomi and Iriomote Islands, both worthwhile destinations.

3Dear Bamse and kaminoge,
Thank you both for your replies. i am going for around a week, 7 days 6 nights or so. do you know if there are any ferries from miyako to ishigaki or possibly from naha to any of the two islands? i read many places that ferry services have been discontinued...
Also, do you think it would be better not to go in september? i am going from the 7th to the 14th hopefully.
Thank you for your advice! it has been very helpful!!

4We took a ferry from Naha to ishigaki, but I believe it has indeed been discontinued.
Whether to go in September or not depends on your luck with typhoons. Other than the typhoon days, we had perfect weather. On the other hand for 2-3 days we were pretty much stuck.

5Ferry service was discontinued several years ago, so the only way to get to islands such as Miyako and Ishigaki from Naha is by air. Both Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways offer domestic air passes that can save on fares, but I recommend getting the Okinawa Island Pass. I used it last summer to fly between Naha and Ishigaki.
