looking for area for hiking near cinque terraHi there,
I'm heading off to cinque terra in a couple of weeks. I will stay there for a while then have 10 days or so to play with... will leave afterwards from Bologna....
I want to go hiking with tent somewhere not too far from there and don't want to go to really high mountains as I'll be walking alone.
I know Cinque Terra will probably be incredibly crowded in August so can anyone recommend an area great for hiking nearby?
Could be a place with a few shorter circular walks or longer treks.

1Trains on the La Spezia - Parma line (likely to be the route you use to get to Bologna) pass through Aulla. I don't know the area too well as it is several years since I was last there, but the area around Aulla and down to Bagna di Lucca might be OK for you.Trains on both the La Spezia - Parma and the Aulla - Bagni di Lucca - Lucca lines run every couple of hours. The area is generally known as the Alpi Apuane.

2If you're looking for ideas, we have a hiking website on http://liguriah.wordpress.com : we organize hikes for free, if you would like to join us you're very much welcome to! (although I can't guarantee we'll have a hike while you're here)
Anyway, I would recommend you taking a loop around the Palmaria Island (the views are more stunning than Cinque Terre themselves). La Spezia-Portovenere is another legendary hike, while Bonassola-Framura is the easiest trail..and yet doesn't disappoint, thanks to a lookout point known as "hop of the hare".

3A bit further away from Cinquterra is a town North of Imperia. Ormea - just over the pass into Piedmont - is the central point for a network of hut trips and/or circular hikes in the Maritime Alps. The hiking is not too strenuous nor are the mountains as high as the more senior Alps north and west of there. The scenery is stunning. You often find views of the Med.' And the breezes off of the sea make the days more temperate. We hiked Cinqueterra as well. Though beautiful, the 34c temps (and crowds you mentioned) diminsh the experience a bit.
