10 day trip around Slovenia - would you rent a car? suggested itinerary?Hi all!
I am going to Slovenia for 10 days, starting in the Italian border at Trieste on 5th August.
What itinerary would you recommend?
Do you happen to know if I can rent a car in Trieste and go to Slovenia for the trip and return the car at Trieste?
Thanks you all in advance for your inputs!

Thanks for your answer!
We are seeking to do some trekking, picture cool landscapes, swim in lakes, watch some caves and visit ancient villages or cities. I guess that's what Slovenia offers but I do not what itinerary should I follow. My big doubt is wether rent a car already in Trieste and do all the trip with it or rely on public transport to visit the country.
Thanks for your further inputs!

3Look at the car rental prices. Look at the cost of getting to/from someplace is Slovenia. Sometimes it makes sense to rent a car for a week but to use public transport for the first or last part of the trip because of the costs or the locations or the travel times and schedules. A car is nice if you base yourself someplace and then take day trips but if you travel in a circuit that it might not be necessary.
I don't know Slovenia well enough to make specific recommendations and suggest that you look at the destination section of the Lonelyplanet website and the inyourpocket.com guides.

5For cheap car rental try www.atet.si. They have offices in Ljubljana and Bled and appeared to be cheaper than than the competition when i was looking. Also come with a glowing reference in more than one guidebook. Hiring a car in Italy was a lot more expensive.
If you're flying into Trieste consider taking the airport bus to Gorizia (Italy), then the train from Nova Gorica (Slovenia - to transfer there is a bus every 10 mins from outside gorizia train station to Nova Gorica train station which takes 15 min). there's then a direct train to Bled Jezero. total for that will be €10-€15. you can then pick the car up. Motorway charges seemed steep (i think €30 for a months pass) but since there are only 2 in slovenia and distances are short I think you could get away without using them.
Transport from trieste to ljubljana is more frequent, and i think takes between 1-2 hours.

Yes, we can also confirm that Atet are great. We had friends who just used them for 2 months and said they were fantastic. They allowed them to leave the car there while they went to England for a week and returned to get it again. Also they can deliver a car to wherever you want. For instance, they arranged to have the car ready in Nova Gorica for an extra 70euros. Just be wary that the GPS's dont always work in the mountains and are pretty useless when trying to find small villages in remote places. Otherwise all good.

Trieste - Lipica - Skocjan Jama - Ljubljana - Skofja Loka - Bled - Bohinj - Tolmin - Monfalcone - Trieste
Much variation but it should help to finetune when you provide your interests as said bu everbrite.
Use a seven-day vignette from Skocjan Jama to Bled since the national (so not A-) roads between them are a pain in the ass (literally). Week = € 15.
Fines are hefty if not used. And not always announced very obvious (understatement).
