Visiting the sunshine coast in BC

Hello! I will be coming back to Canada for a visit and this time I would like to spend some time on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia. If anyone has any advice for me I would appreciate it. I am not so young, so no more white water rafting as I do not want to have to replace a hip again. I would ask my son who has spent a lot of time in Canada, but he is off traveling again. I will be there in late September. All advice appreciated.

Are you renting a car?

Because public transportation there is poor to nonexistent.

If coming to the Powell River portion of the Sunshine Coast you may fly in from Vancouver's YVR in just a few minutes. Or take a scheduled bus there, with twice a day service. Once in Powell River there is good bus service within the immediate area, morning to evenings, seven days a week. Your timing is good for a visit, weather is often fine then.

Hi Gertrude,

I used to live on the Sunshine Coast. You're going to love it! There is plenty to do and see without any strain.

Transportation between the communities along the coast is excellent. There is a public bus that travels regularly back and forth from the ferry terminal through each town and village. I lived there and managed well for a couple of years with no car.

At the Vancouver airport, you can hop on a Greyhound bus that takes you right into downtown Sechelt (the driver lets you out anywhere along the route on the coast you want), a town midway along the coast. In Sechelt (and all along the coast) you'll find numerous b&bs and a hostel near Roberts Creek.
Communities:

Gibsons:
  • is a beautiful little harbour town, and the location for the Canadian TV seris "The Beachcomers".
  • great fish 'n chip place there
  • seek out the alley shopping row behind the main street
  • marine museum
  • in the summer, there is usually live music in the park

Gower Point:
  • You will need a car and a map to get here. It's rather close to Gibsons, and a great place to storm/wave watch.
  • There is a nice beach here and pretty (easy going) walking trail.

Roberts Creek:
  • this is a special and magical artsy community off the highway.
  • To get here, you need to take the "Lower road" route. If traveling by the local bus, ask the driver before you get on, as every other bus will go this route (they alternate between the highway route and the lower road route)
  • Stop at the "Gum boot" cafe for cinnamon buns and amazing food. The beach down the road from the Gum Boot is one of the best on the coast at low tide! (a little local secret)

Davis Bay:
  • another great beach here and pretty spot to stop for snacks.
  • nice walking along the seawall
  • there is a beautiful easy walking trail from the small park just east of Whitaker road (before the church, where the highway takes a sharp turn). This trail goes along the creek and is exceptionally pretty.

Sechelt:
  • The beach and trail along it is gorgeous.
  • The main downtown section is an easy few blocks directly north of the beach
  • The local swimming pool is one of the nicest I've ever been in! Decorated with artificial trees that they decorate for Halloween and Xmas, eagles and murals on the walls! ...lots of sunlight and a wall of windows!

Porpois Bay Provincial Park:
  • a lovely park and camp ground about 10 min north on Porpois bay road from Sechelt.

Sargeant Bay Provincial Park:
  • this is off the highway and you'll need a car to get to it, but well worth the effort.
  • there is a fascinating walking trail loop
  • excellent warm & calm swimming
  • there's an enormous tree stump of a few hundred year old tree on the beach that is an ever transforming play thing for kids with drift wood etc.

Other places you can look up and explore:

  • Skoocum chuck narrows
  • the walking labyrinth outside St Hildas church
  • Halfmoon bay (general store, snacks, beach)
  • Smugglers cove: was used by real pirates
  • if you want, you can travel up the entire coast all the way to Powell River, then take a ferry back to Vancouver Island (Comox) or to Texada Island
  • Cliff Gilker Park: stunning trail through the rain forest, past creeks and waterfalls and easy walking

You're going to have a wonderful trip!
Happy Travels

Thank you so very much Melifera. I will put all of this on my list except maybe the shopping. I like the idea of a gumboat cafe.

Mr. 9 - I am not sure I will go as far as Powell River. I have not heard much about it.

hardnose the highway. Thank you for your comment - I may rent a car. Although I travel light, with my new hip its better for me to drive I think.

truenic - yes I know we are long overdue for a visit.
