4 families in Vietnam Dec/Jan need a base

Hi, we are 4 families with a total of 7 kids ranging from age 18 months to 8 yrs -- we want to travel to Vietnam in Dec/Jan and are trying to figure out the best place to spend a week to 10 days, but still be able to see enough without too much travel from the home base. Can anyone suggest a relaxed itinerary that allows us to move, at most between 2 places? We are thinking Hanoi and Hoi An, but still exploring different plans. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Best wishes,
KD

Hi There.
Our family (two children of 5 and 8) spent one month in Vietnam this April. I would definately recommend Hoi An as the perfect base. We ended up staying there for 8 days. It is a lovely town - located near the beech. Rent bicycles and go wherever you want. (The kids sit on the integrated cushion on the back of the bike!) Two perfect daytrips are: 1) Heaven & Earth Tours (see www.vietnam-bicycle.com) 2) Thuan Tinh Island cooking tour
Of course Hoi An is also very wellknown for all its taylors, so you can hardly go there and not have clothes custommade :-)
Enjoy!
/best,
