San Francisco to Kansas City, MO - Destination Atlanta

Hello Everyone,

I'm headed to Atlanta from San Francisco with a short stay in Kansas City,MO. When I drove here a little over a year ago from Chicago i took 80 all the way. Chicago to Kearny - Kearny to Salt Lake City - Salt Lake City to San Francisco. Great route thanks to you guys. Now I'm headed to Atlanta from San Francisco with a 5 day layover in KC, MO. Any suggestions? Leaving in 6 weeks.

Thanks

How long is the trip?
What are your interests? History? Art? Music? Food? Hikes? Bikes? Night clubs? Strip clubs? Remember, we don't know you and we like may be what you hate.

with a 5 day layover in KC, MO
Why? Family?

Leaving in 6 weeks.
That's around the first weekend in September. Prepare for the issues regarding Labor Day.

Definitely drive I-70 through Glenwood Canyon in Colorado--it's the one and only Interstate in this country that's also the most scenic route.

Yes - a lot of this route through Utah and Colorado is very scenic - I agree with mrpenney.

Interstate-70 from KC to St. Louis, then south on Interstate-55 to Interstate-40 in Memphis, then east through Nashville and Knoxville, then turn off to Atlanta. Great area for people who like jazz, blues, country music!

I'm actually relocating again. My daughter is expecting and lives in ATL. I'm driving rather than shipping my car. I have a friend who lives in KC that I'm going to visit. I have to be in ATL by 9/7.

Ok, based on what you've said so far, I peg that as about a week for the trip, with 5 days spent in KC.
If that is the case, that won't really give you time to see anything but the road (outside KC), and even that is pushing it

And your interests are... ?

How difficult is the drive on 50? I love to drive, but as I get older I don't handle the mountain driving as well and would love to get it over with as quickly as possible.

Highway #50 through the Colorado Rockies is not a freeway, as is Interstate-70. Gunnison is 8,000-ft elevation and Monarch Pass/Continental Divide is more than 9,000-ft elevation. Going west to east is not as steep a climb, but you need low gear going downhill. Are you towing a U-Haul trailer -- there is a detour around Monarch Pass which I took. The section of highway near Canyon City is narrow as it follows the Arkansas River through its canyon. It intersects with Pueblo, Colorado on Interstate-25. I drove I-25 south through Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico, to pick up Interstate-40, which you can take east. Its temperatures are quite hot in August, through New Mexico and Texas. September might be cooler.

I was going to say stay in Country Club plaza for access to nightlife and also Westport area as well as Museums and sports venues, but now you have the lodging covered, cant your friend tell you what to see in KC area?

Your post is not clear at all, are we to guess all these things? what are your interest? Golf? Fish? BBQ? Arts? Strip Clubs?

I guess my main concern is safety and time. This drive is more for relocation purposes not vacation (unfortunately), but certainly want a scenic drive. When I look at the map and see the mountains a knot forms in my stomach and I have to tell myself "I'm not the first person who's made this trip and won't be the last."

When I drove by myself from Chicago a little over a year ago, I took 80 all the way and did Chicago - Kearny, Kearny - Salt Lake City, Salt Lake City - San Francisco. This time taking a more southern route, what would be the best way to map out San Francisco to Kansas City, MO? Once I leave KC I will drive straight to Atlanta. I need to map out hotels before arriving in KC. My son is going with me to help me drive so I can do a little more than 500 - 700 miles each leg. I still don't want to drive at night other than starting out just before dawn. I figure the first day I can start out around 3 or 4am. I should hit 50 right around sunrise.

How long is the drive through Nevada? I figured I'd take 50 to 70. Is it too ambitious to think I'd make it through Nevada and Utah in one day?
