3 weeks in LOS - lonely jurney

Hello everyone,
My journey to LOS was to be with my wife, but life circumstances decided that i must (i want) go alone. Initialy I've planed almost 18 days on sightseeing and rest of my/our jurney spend on one of southern islands. Now i have to change my plans and need urs help. I'm taking off 27th August and back 18th Sept.
I arrive to Bangkok at 3:30 am (Aerosvit), at this spot i need some recommendations about accommodation (only for this first night or even for rest of my stay in Bangkok.)
I want to spend 3 or 4 days in capital. Of course my itinerary provide every "must see" places. Additionaly i want to visist royal thai air force musemu.
Next i thought to visit Ayuthaya and Kanchanaburi (by train?). I've heard from my friends that the former capital isn't worth to see, is it true? (i must add that i'm interesting in see as much as i can).
Next step in my itinerary will be Chiang Mai. I've read that i should buy all night train ticket from Bangkok to Chiang Mai directly after arrival? And maybe u can recomend me how to combine my plans with visiting Ayuthaya and Kanchanaburi? Bangkok--->Ayuthaya--->Kanchanaburui--->Bangkok? or i should catch the train for instead in Ayuthaya. In Chiang Mai for sure i want to buy trecking trip (any recomends?)
After Chiang Mai (4 days) i want to visit Chiang Rai. Frankly i have no idea what should be next? Maybe i sholud jump into Burma? or should go to nerby Laos border? forasmuch as i will be traveling alone i'm not concering about weather.
Regards
Mariusz

hi mariusz
even if travelling on your own (and not as planned with your wife), having 3 weeks in thailand is great, so i'm sure you'll have a good time.

bangkok: i would stay in a place on phra arthit road or soi rambuttri (in banglampuu, near khao san road). the advantages: khao san road is busy, but also fun - loads of restaurants, shops, bars, you can easily meet people, sit in a café and watch people, its a really relaxed / lively atmosphere. it's not exactly quiet, that why i prefer to stay near it, but not on it. another plus - at phra arthit pier you can catch the chao prya river boats (a "bus" service on the river), in my opinion the most pleasant way to travel in bangkok. by boat, you can easily reach the main must sees in bangkok - the grand palace, wat po (you might also want to have a thai massage there) and wat arun. for the rest of your time there, it really depends on your interests. i like taking the river bus up to the northern final stop in nonthaburi, its a lovely trip and there is a nice market there. the new siam riverside guesthouse is right on the river, and has a nice terracce with a small pool. its on phra arthit road, just 2 minutes or so away from the pier http://www.newsiam.net/ns/index.php. new siam II is a bit cheaper, but also good, in a small alley and as well with a small pool.

i like ayuttaya, but i personally prefered sukothai (the other former capitel). kanchanaburi is nice, a smallish city, good food, beautiful landscapes. reading that you plan to visit the royal air force museum in bangkok, you will probably find the jeath war museum, "death railway" bridge etc. interesting. kanchanaburi can be reached by train or bus.

to continue to chiang mai (or sukothai), you might have to go back to bangkok (sorry, not sure on that). to sukothai, you can fly (with bangkok airways) or take a bus. in sukothai, hire a bicycle to drive around old sukothai.

to chiang mai, you fly as well of course, or take the train (or a bus, but i prefer the train).
what to do after chiang mai really depends on your interests. going to burma would mean going back to bangkok and fly from there to yangon, i dont think worthwile for a couple of days. you could spend more time in the north and go to pai and mae hong son. not the best season (its neither for chiang mai). i would probably prefer to spend a couple of days on a beach in ko samui, ko phangan or ko tao (again, depending on what you are looking for).

have a good trip to thailand !

Honey Hotel, 5 minute walk from Asoke skytrain station.
KSR is for gap year kids and there are no decent transportation options there.

Of course my itinerary provide every "must see" places
Not a chance in only 3/4 days

Additionaly i want to visist royal thai air force musemu
Take a taxi. It's worthwhile if you like old planes, but a bit depressing seeing so many deteriorating outside.

i want to visit Chiang Rai
Defo visit the White Temple.

or should go to nerby Laos border?
Go to Chiang Saen- very historical.

I don't know if you can go direct Kanch to Ayyuthaya.

Ok thanks for advice.

As you propably see i can adjust my time in Bangkok. So how much time in your opinion i need to spent on spot to see all must seen places. I just want to mention that i'm not intresting in art museums etc. Frankly i'm not going to visit all temples, maybe this is mistake and i should visit especially thoes smallest and not as much crowded by tourist.

So actually my initial intinerary looks like this:
1. Bangkok 5 days
1b. Trip to Kanchanaburi through Amphawa, Phetchaburi, Hua Hin (1 extra day) or direct to 2.
2. Kanchanburi 1 day
3. Back to Bangkok and from there go to Ayuthaya 2 days (propably 1/3 day for back trip, finding place to sleep, and another day for sightseeing)
4. Night train to Chiang Mai
5. Chiang Mai 5 - 6 days ( include 2 days organized trip - but according to LP guide it isn't so worth to take?!).
6. Then go to Chiang Rai via Chiang Dao, Fang (1 day - it's enough?)
7. Chiang Rai - 2 days
8. Chiang Sean 1 day
9. Maybe i'll back to south to Sukhothai (1 day) and then..
9. Back to Bangkok
and at this time it's over propably i'll spend rest of 2-3 days at one of the island near Bangkok (which you prefered?) i just want to lay down and do nothing, drinking, watching and restin' :-)
I let pass the south of LOS 'cos in September it isn't apperently worth to visit it becouse of wet season.

One additional info. I have found place to sleep in Bangkok. NapPark. I think this one has a quite good location and sholud ensure me company to sightseen or at least company for chat.:-) thaibeachlovers wrote that KSR is for gap year kids and there are no decent transportation options there. Could you expalin what does "gap year kids" mean? :-))

yes, no skytrain or metro station anywhere near banglampuu / ksr, but i still feel its a great - for me the best place to stay at in bangkok - i have stayed on sukhumvit road (on a soi off it), on the river near the mandarin oriental, next to mbk mall, near patpong, on ksr, and in the surroundings (soi rambuttri and phra arthit road) and those two last places are by far my favourites (even tough i stayed in more luxurious places in the other locations).

of course the skytrain is very convenient. but i prefer the chao phraya express boats. and most must sees like wat arun, wat pot and the grand palace are more easily reached by boat from banglampu than from the siam square area or sukhumvit (both reachable by skytrain).

gap year kids - cant of course comment on what thaibeachlover means.
the way i understand it / my experience is: young people (kids) travelling for a couple of months, or a year, between finishing their studies and starting "serious life", probably for the first and only time in their life. and some of them might just follow the flow and go to places they have no idea about, but its "on". and no, i dont think that ksr is that way (anymore). especially in the evenings, you can also find plenty of locals in the restaurants and bars in and around kao san road.
