Places to buy a meal in Ukraine
HiIs it common to find kind of self-service places where you can get a square meal at lunchtime: soup, stew, rice, potatoes etc.for a reasonable price without waiters or any of that nonsense? I mean real food, not junk food.
If so, could someone kindly tell me the name of this kind of place so I can make enquiries, because being unobservant in nature I would probably walk right past it without seeing it.

Your best bet for this is the food hall of a shopping centre, for example the globus on independence square in Kiev. These tend to be self-service; you line up along a counter and point to what you want and pay with your tray of food at a checkout. Plastic plates and cutlery etc. No language skills needed. I especially liked shvidko (as recommended by #1; shvidko means "quickly") as its no-nonsense traditional ukrainian food.4
I liked very much Pusata Kata in Kiev, a chain maybe in other places too - as andrewua recommended in cyrillic .
