Places to buy a meal in Ukraine

Hi

Is it common to find kind of self-service places where you can get a square meal at lunchtime: soup, stew, rice, potatoes etc.for a reasonable price without waiters or any of that nonsense? I mean real food, not junk food.

If so, could someone kindly tell me the name of this kind of place so I can make enquiries, because being unobservant in nature I would probably walk right past it without seeing it.

Yes, there are self-service restaurants with reasonable prices like "Пузата хата", "Швидко", "Велика ложка". etc.

Unless things have drastically changed in the 2 years since I visited probably yeah but your chances of being served unless you speak Ukrainian/Russian are pretty minimal! Don't underestimate the power of "nyet" and a shrug...!

Your best bet for this is the food hall of a shopping centre, for example the globus on independence square in Kiev. These tend to be self-service; you line up along a counter and point to what you want and pay with your tray of food at a checkout. Plastic plates and cutlery etc. No language skills needed. I especially liked shvidko (as recommended by #1; shvidko means "quickly") as its no-nonsense traditional ukrainian food.

I liked very much Pusata Kata in Kiev, a chain maybe in other places too - as andrewua recommended in cyrillic .

These self service restaurants are everywhere, The ones in Globus or in Metrograd are not really good. You just have to look a bit around and you'll find them

Thanks lads. I just mean what is the generic name for this kind of place. So I can ask " is there a self-service restaraunt here?" Sorry if I have misunderstood anything. Also, I am thinking about smaller towns, not big city shopping centres.

You should ask "Чи є тут ресторан швидкого харчування?"
