In the very early stages of planning a long over land trip (approx 9 months) for about five years time when we will have a 7 year old and a 6 year old. I'm aware that, particularly in relation to Africa, what looks like a stable country and fine land border now may be a nightmare in 5 years and vice versa so avoiding planning a route at this stage.
However, I want to check I'm roughly on target for budget. We're thinking of doing this with our own vehicle, probably bought in Norway but there is a possibility we might ship a car to cyprus and get there by public transport. We don't need luxury accomodation but I also don't want to be sleeping in a tent for 9 months - I anticipate sleeping in and around the car when we need/want to rather than because we're out of cash for a mid-range hotel (meaning, ideally electricity and bathroom). We don't need expensive guided tours but I don't want to miss out on key sights because the entrance fee was $20.
Excluding the cost of the car (whatever it is), is this likely to be doable for £50,000? Anyone else who has done similar, how much did you allow for?
Thanks

Easy; we travelled Europe, North Africa and the Middle East for 10 months on less than a third of that, and i don't believe countries further south will become more expensive for travelling.Taking your budget, you will be having around 180 Pounds to spend a day, which is sufficient in Europe and high budget in Africa.
Looking at your stated accomodation requirements i would actually advice you to look into a small (van based) camper. Ideal as you will have your own home with you, which will benifit the children, and will further possitively impact your budget.
PS I realise you trip is a long way away, but I am completely at a loss why you would want to ship a car to Cyprus when you are traveling the route you are, There are many ways to cross (or drive around) the Med but to get to Africa from Cyprus is almost impossible.

See the thing I said about things changing? We're now doing the silk route :) Probably end up going to the moon in 5 years' time.Looks like the budget is good anyway. Not that we have this money yet of course. It's hard to get a handle on how much things cost as it's the unexpected that is the expensive bit. Thanks
The Cyprus thing is linked to there being family in Cyprus - I'll tell my husband it's madness to get out of having to spend a month with the inlaws.
