S.E Asia is quite safe and some of us do prefer not to go in groups. My friend who is now 60 just returned after teaching and traveling for the last 9 years by herself. She's made close friends with people from around the world.
You can always join a group tour once your abroad if that's what appeals to you.
Don't let being alone stop you. My advice is go for it !

To add to the age thing, I started out on a solo year-long RTW in 1994, at the ripe old age of 51. Left Vancouver for UK-Kenya-Madagascar-Kenya-India-Thailand-Bali-West Papua-Papua New Guinea-Solomon Islands-Vanuatu-Fiji-home. Got sick in Kenya (2nd month of travel) and carried the bug all the way back home, as well as having an accident in India that put paid to using both arms for a couple of months. Was hospitalized in PNG and Solomon Islands. Then I had to cut out the New Caledonia stop because I started running out of money in Vanuatu and had another month and a half to go. But I still wanted to keep going and did not want to catch the plane home at the end of the trip.As #16 says, it's addictive and I'm still hooked.

Hi Heather:I'm an older traveler (43 Ha!!) and I'm looking for someone to travel with in Asia for the next 6 months (End of August through end of the year) I'm currently in Bangkok and have already done some points in Thailand but there's more I want to do. I've been traveling by boat and all of a sudden I have a need to travel with someone else. I've been on the road for 20 months and the necessity to share all the beautiful vistas I've seen is growing stronger.
If you want to meet me in Bangkok (I have an apartment here, although I'm American) we can share hotels, good conversation, great meals and pictures of each other.
Let me know if you are interested. I'm easy to get along, flexible, great traveler and patient.
Renae
