Mauritanian Visa in Rabat
Current as of June 21, 2012. The visa section of the embassy only takes visa applications from 9AM until 11AM. If you are on line and haven't been seen by then, you will be asked to come back again. This was told me by regulars. I arrived at 7:45 and had 20 people in front of me but the line went quickly. You CANNOT get a visa at the border. Even Moroccans living in the Western Sahara have to go north to go south.
You must leave your passport with them and return at 2:30 the next day. Prior posters have mentioned that everyone gets a month regardless and that it generally starts the day you pick it up. What I saw was a roulette wheel. Three Spaniards (2 West Africans originally) where given 1 month, 2 weeks, and 7 days even though 2 worked together and had asked for multiple entries. There dates started immediately. I, an American, asked to start on June 28 and was given a start date of June 26.
So, for Americans wondering, they do issue us visas, but remember it's a roulette wheel and that might change again

Just picked up my visa in Rabat. Same info as Viaggero but I managed to get a 3 month, multiple entry one with a fair bit of haggling for 680 dhs. Start date is 10 days later than issue date but that seemed negotiable.5
I applied for a multiple entry and got a single entry. This was back in January 2011
There was a lot of pushing and shoving as people tried to force their way into the embassy.
Did a small video diary during my trip regarding this

A month's visa is 340Dh at the embassy in Rabat. I was there last week.To add a couple of extra comments to the good information above: The doors open at 9am, so get there by 8 at the very latest. It is a scrum, but there is a good chance that one of the people queuing will have organised a list of names, to apply some order. Make sure you get your name on this list as soon as you arrive, so you get your place in the queue. I got there about 10am, and was number 94 on the list. After an hour, I gave up and came back the next day at 8am and was number 30. A lot faster.
Pick-up was the following day – you get given a time to come with your receipt. My pick-up took about five minutes.
