Chinese Wife Cake
Walmart's Best Value store brand has surprised me again, this time with "Chinese Wife Cake". They are small slightly sweet-tasting "bings", individually wrapped within a larger bag. My wife says it's a Guangdong snack. These names are amusing to say the least.1
I have not tried the Walmart ones - though I must say, i've been disappointed with most wife cake variations served here in Beijing. But then again, what do the northerners know about any pastry with a hint of moisture in them :P (flames expected). In Hong Kong you'll find them in most bakeries, but among the larger chains I prefer the Kee Wah ones personally. More so than Wing Wah. The main ingredient is winter melon.
As for the name - there's a story behind that... easy to find with a quick search on Google. Who knows if it's real though!

Walmart should sell parent-in-law-bing 公婆饼 too.Paid 2 rmb for one from a street vendor in a back alley of Shanghai. Supposed to have tidbit of ground pork. For whatever reasons, it tasted like filled with thorny tensions!
