Visiting YudanakaI am considering travelling to Yudanaka to see the macaques but wonder if climbing footwear is necessary; I don`t have boots or trainers on this trip. I am in Kanazawa at the moment after travelling from Takayama at lunch time. I will stay here tomorrow then travel by bus to Wajima, stay for one night then return to Kanazawa in order to reach Nagano. I haven`t checked the options to Nagano but ,looking at the LP map the most efficient seems to be to travel via Joetsu; bus or train. (any comments?)
Has anyone done the trip to Yudanaka from Nagano, and could you supply the details ? The most important information will be the requirement or not for climbing footwear.
I will check for replies in the morning. Thanks in advance.

1From Kanazawa to Nagano you have a choice of train (one change, 6500 - 7000 yen) or bus (direct, ca. 4000 yen). Either takes about 4 hours.
For the rest see Japan Guide. Locally there are two access routes, see here. We went to the monkeys via Kanbayashi onsen bus stop and returned walking along the road. As far as I remember, the trail and the road were both mostly downhill in this direction. Japan Guide and also signs beside the trail seem concerned about trail conditions, but I don't remember the trail to be particularly bad, rather a wide and comfortable path. I would not attempt it in high heels but any normal footwear should be fine especially as you are there in summer. Definitely it is nothing like climbing.

2Agree with above..I did it in trekking sandals no problem.
BTW have you been to the ninja temple in Kanazawa? Its a great place! Even if the guide only speaks Japanese, there is a booklet in English with everything he says translated....

3Thanks Bamse, looks like I will catch the bus to Nagano. I asked at the railway station ticket office last night for details of trains from Anamizu, on the peninsula, to Nagano. The print-out was like a scroll. From Animazu I take the local line to Nanao then transfer to Kanazawa. Then an express to Naoetsu (can`t find it on the LP map) then the Shinetsu line to Nagano. The journey starts at 07:10 and ends at 17:18......enough said. I have looked at your link to Yudanaka and it will be very usefull. I could buy some cheap trainers if necessary.
Oh, thanks for the tip about the temple here in Kanazawa. If my head doesn`t feel like a warehouse after the visiting the gardens and the old districts then I will squeeze it in. I overdid the architecture and temples in Takayama even though they are gorgeous; especially the two merchants houses and the Takayama Jinya.
