Suggestions for girls 40th birthday trip
My friends and I are planning a trip for our 40th birthdays. We know what we want but aren't sure which island to go with. I'm looking for some feedback. There are six of us and we are looking at early July 2013 since half of us are teachers. Here is our combined wish list:Budget-$2000/ per person for flight, accommodations, food
On the beach-either a villa or all inclusive
Good food
Lots of culture-i.e. not too touristy
Adults only if possible-this time away from our kids so we don't want to be surrounded by other people's
Good options for excursions for the adventurous girls in the group
Safe
We would like to avoid Mexico, Cuba, DR simply because we have all been to these places several times
6 hour maximum flight from Toronto
Fun and nightlife nearby
I would appreciate any feedback. So far Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Barbados have been suggested as possibilities. Also Anguilla but flight from Toronto seems too long. Thanks in advance for your help!

For Anguilla, fly into St. Martin SXM.Was thinking of Barbados & also Grenada.
Since you are traveling off season, not all locations will have a lot of flight options which can factor into price.
Also, I'd think some more about what accommodation you want as there is no AI in Anguilla & maybe not Grenada.

tripadvisor.ca --Jamaica Forum -those guys are experts on AI's in Jamaica not so much here on Lonelyplanet ..the travellers here love to give advice too about their experiences, however. On the Jamaica forum, @tripadvisor they give reviews while they are at the resortson their vacation and after they return home...

Dominican Republic has all you suggested. I just returned from there.7
Jamaica would be a good choice. There are a number of all-inclusives that would meet your criteria and lots of excursions. Though it's "touristy" it hasn't lost its unique culture - even in the tourist areas.I would encourage you to do an AI rather than a villa. A villa means you will all have to make more group decisions and handle more logistics. This can be stressful and frustrating for a group. At an AI you can think and plan excursions if you want to, or do zero planning and thinking and just go with the flow, plus you can occasionally take a break from each other.

Perhaps...some of the Pacific Islands...just off Vancouver or California...The West Indies have many Islands...some lesser known ones might be possible distinations... Check your Lonely Planet for that area...

I'd go for Jamaica too. A beautiful island, lovely people, amazing culture and lots of partying!11
I'd suggest San Andres or Providencia off the coast of Colombia. Pristine islands, superb food, nice diving, cocktails etc. In any case have lots of fun, you only get 40 once and life's just starting ;)
