I don't know about the best place, but Nafplio would be as convenient a place as any, as well as having a number of its own attractions to fill a day or two. Sea-side location is nice for evenings, a couple of forts, the site of Tiryns about 3-4 km outside of town on the main road towards Mycenae. There should be a morning bus from Nafplio and an afternoon return -- inquire at station, timetables are seasonal. You could goto Mycenae in the morning, stop off at Tiryns on the way back to Nafplio, and walk the rest of the way into town.

Check here for bus tables Nafplio - Mikines: http://www.ktel-argolidas.gr/?module=default&pages_id=3&lang=enThere are 3 daily buses each way.
Check here for a lot of Nafplio - information: http://www.visitnafplio.com
The road between Tiryns and Nafplio is partly unpaved, and it's about 4 km. Could be ok off season, but in the summer heat....
You could hop on the bus to/from Argos that drives just past Tiryns. But Tiryns, in my opinion, is a better site than Mykonos, few visitors, smaller but in some ways more impressive.

Anybody know if there is left luggage available in Mycenae(Mikines) bus station? I plan to take the KTEL bus from Athens to Nafplio, stopping at Mikines to visit the site for a few hours before catching the bus again to Nafplio where I'll be staying the night. If there is no left luggage in Mikines, then I'll have to go straight to Nafplio, check in to a hotel, drop my luggage off, then double back to Mikines, which costs more time and money.
