Nice small town/village to stay in in Estonia
Would anyone recommend a good small town/village in Estonia to stay in? Probably in south or central Estonia. I'm driving up from Vilnius back to Tallin and looking for an interesting, smaller place to stay the night on the way back. Looking for some pretty scenery or interesting castles/manors. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!1
Hi,I recomend north-east Estonia - Toila village on the sea. Very beautiful sea with amazing scenery!!
Also I love Valaste village with waterfall (nearby hostel and cafe, and nearby Saka manor and hotel) , Iisaku village with its chuch and views and Purtse with its castle and close to the sea.

Toils is nice but it is a little bit far from Vilnius-Tallinn route. I think best options would be Pärnu or Viljandi. Check some information from http://www.visitestonia.com/en/holiday-destinations/city-guidesPärnu is our summer capital. During nice weather people come there all over Estonia. There is beach, nightlife and culture events. Viljandi is smaller and quieter. Once per year population doubles when there is annual folk festival (http://www.folk.ee)

It is worth to drive to Toila and spend there evening, end next enjoy landscapes and huge Lake Peipsi near motorway (and buy smoked fish near road). Road Tallinn - Parnu is very busy.4
Somewhere in South Estonia is your best bet, as that's roughly half-way through your trip. Although it may be a bit quicker via Pärnu, if you are staying overnight it won't make much difference. Ventura's on the money with Pärnu or Viljandi, but there are many places of interest to stop in the south too. I'd recommend Otepää for scenery, and on the road there (route 72) you could stop at Sangaste castle, which is pretty quirky. If you don't mind diverting slightly in this area, Rõuge would be a lovely stop - Võrumaa has the best nature scenery in Estonia in my opinion, and either Võru town or Rouge is an option for accomodation. Loads of interesting things to see around here, if you have the time.

Don't know about your budget but one option would be to stay in Taagepera castle. It has been recently renovated for a hotel. You can check it out http://www.taagepera.eu/ It may be a little off track but close to where I lived as a child. There are Helme castle ruins closeby, also Helme cave if you want to visit. There are some small but deep lakes. If it is hot and you want to go for a swim I would recommend to go to Tõrva. There is lake Vanamõisa that has the highest jumping tower in Estonia, 11 meters high :)Hope this helps.

Haapsalu. There's a festival in mid-August to celebrate a local ghost, the White Lady Festival, but it's a beautiful location any time, with a beautiful castle. Haapsalu looks like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnthefinn/sets/72157627437069150/7
Having been there a few days ago, I recommend Haapsalu as well. It's lovely and the castle it's worth a visit.ADVERTISEMENT
