Where to spend several winter months in the Canaries ?Hello,
I am a retired 66-year-old guy who enjoys spending part of the winter in a sunny climate. This year I am thinking of going to the Canaries where I have found quite a few self catering apartments to rent. But I am at a loss as to make a choice among various islands, cities and coastlines.
Could someone help considering I am looking for a place being :
+ quiet and preferably away from the most touristic spots
+ rather pleasant
+ a good starting point for walks
+ with a couple of supermarkets around

1Tenerife is very busy, especially in the winter months. Gran Canaria less so but still busy. Lanzarote doesn't have much on it other than a massive lava park. Fuertaventura is quieter but has a wind that can sand blast you on beaches in winter. La Gomera doesn't have that much.
I think I would pick La Palma:
Book maybe four days somewhere and check out the estate agents when there to find a place you like. hostelbookers has budget hotels, B&B's, etc.
la palma long term rentals typed into Google brings up a number of sites.

2Every year I spend some winter time on La Palma. From the very beautifull town of Santa Cruz busses go in all directions over the island to places where you can go for great walks. Santa Cruz is a small historic town with a lively center, full of shops and bars and some nice restaurants.
I am not a beach going person, so I don't mind that the beach is not very nice. There is a better beach in Los Cancajos, five minutes by bus, but I wouldn't want to stay there. It is one of these places that did not exist before the big tourism bizz began to build hotels and appartment buildings there.
Personally I always stay in Apartementos la Fuente in Santa Cruz (www.la-fuente.com)

3Thanks a lot to Cyberia and Erica.
La Palma seems to be the place to stay. I am going to work on this.
