driving from malpensa to malcesineHi, we're flying into malpensa airport and need to get to malcesine on Lake Garda at around 9.30 at night. We're thinking of renting a car, but a bit nervous about driving in Italy and also unlikely to use a car for the week so it seems a bit of a waste of money - does anyone have any suggestions?

1Stay at or near the airport and travel the following day. Drive time around 2 1/2 - 3 hours.
Alternative (1) train via Milan to Verona and then catch the bus which runs about hourly http://tech.atv.verona.it/atv_www/orari_extraurb/pdf/62-64.pdf
(2) train via Milan to Desenzano and catch the ferry - see http://www.navlaghi.it/g_download/BATTELLI%20ESTATE%202012.pdf - although there are few ferries that run the full length of the lake

2Verona seems a bit out of the way when practically all trains between Milan and Verona stop at Peschiera Del Garda, where you can also catch the 62/64 bus. So, I'd suggest Malpensa to Milano Centrale train station to Peschiera Del Garda and the bus from there.
Did I know this offhand? No. But a quick Google returned this website, and I then checked the Trenitalia website (this is an older link, I'm told there are more updated ways to enter trenitalia's website). Also, don't look more than a week in advance if you want Trenitalia to show you the slower (by half an hour) trains that are 50% cheaper than the fast ones.

3Hi! To better discover the Veneto region I'd actually recommend the car... it's a little bit expensive but at least you can go wherever you wish and visit the area by yourself, without any need to check timetables etc. Trains in Italy are quite expensive aswell and they're often late.
Btw, should you need any info about the Veneto I recommend this web-site http://www.mybestveneto.com , you can find nice tips, itineraries, hotel and apartments offers around the Lake!
Have a nice and safe trip!!
