I am going to Sucre for a week at the end of July with my 14 year old niece.
After surfing I now hooked on going to Uyuni. Now I am trying to figure out how to get there and back. We can leave Sucre on Sunday. Our flight is at 2 AM early Wed morning from Santa Cruz, though I am contemplating payng extra to change it to one day later to give us more time. Getting back to SAnta Cruz from Uyuni seems to be a nightmare. the best option seems to be flying to La Paz, spend the day there and then get a late flight in time to catch our connection to the flight home. Now I need to decide how to get to Uyuni. Do we take a bus going thru Potosi? Or should we fly to La Paz and get the flight to Uyuni? Time is the problem.
And No matter which way it seems that we would the day getting to Uyuni and would not be able to start the tour until Monday. That would mean we would only be able to do a one day tour - is it worth it? People have said on the forum that you need to see the salt flats at dawn or sunset. And what about altitude problems?
Any advice on any of this woulld be MOST appreciated.

Don't pay for a one-day tour when you could just visit the edge of the flats yourself and get just as good an idea.I've done the overnight bus from Uyuni to Sucre and it wasn't bad. Got in at an inconveneient hour (4 am), but that comes with the territory. I imagine that there is an overnight going the other way as well.
When you get to Uyuni, book a night at one of the salt hotels on the edge of the flats--they're pretty rustic, but still a cool experience. The real advantage of staying with them is that you can walk out to the flats for sunrise (there's an easily-followed road), kick around on them 'till you get the idea of how big and white they are (won't take long), and then head back to your hotel.
Afterwards, fly back to Santa Cruz via La Paz.

If time is the problem then flying Sucre-La Paz-Uyuni is definitely best option.Going back to SC shouldn't be such a nightmare as before as Amaszonas suppose to have direct flight now. Check it out on ground, flying in Bolivia is always preferable if you are short on time.
6 hours bus trip can extend for whole day...
