Hello all,
New poster here - i'm going to be making the trek from Rio - Sao Paulo in eaerly August - i'll have about a week and a half in total and am wondering if anyone could provide me with advice as to what cool places/things one may see during that journey. I've heard Paraty is nice, but only need a day there....just trying to glean some information.
Also, is it possible to rent a car and do this journey?
Thanks in advance,
Dylan

The coast from Rio to Sao Paulo is awesome. Lot's of people stop at Angra dos Rios and take a ferry out Isla Grande for a for a couple of days. That's just beautiful and relaxing (no cars). There are other islands which can be reached by boat also, but if you have a rental car, you'd need to leave it on the mainland. Paraty is beautiful too, but like u said, doesn't really need more than a day or two.My other favorite place was Ubatuba, a little further south. There are dozens of beaches closeby and some of them have gigantic surfing waves. But a car would really come in handy there, if you want to go beach hopping.

Of course is possible to rent a car to do this journey. It's a 6 hours drive, more or less. The most famous touristic places between SP and Rio are:
Ilhabela and Ubatuba in São Paulo's State. Ilha grande and Paraty in Rio de Janeiro's State.

Are you accustomed to driving in Brazil? If not, (although this stretch of roads is by far not the worst in Brazil) and if you don't speak good Portuguese, you may want to rethink and use the comfortable and convenient bus system.4
I'm not accustomed to driving in South America, and I am wary about it. I rented a car in capetown last summer, but you are right, I may forgo the car idea. I've heard Ubatuba is amazing as well, so seems like I got some cool places to check out. Thanks alot for the info everyone, really appreciated.

Dylan,You really don't have to be limited to the Rio to Sao Paulo coast with a week and a half.
I'd probably choose to go UP the coast from Rio to Salvador by bus, stopping in some of the following (S to N): Vlia Velha,in E.S. state, Abrolhos in Bahia, Porto Seguro/Arraial D'Ajuda/Trancoso, Ilheus/Itacare, Marau/Barra Grande, Boipeba, Morro do Sao Paulo, Itaparica, with a few days in Salvador, and then flying back from Salvador to Rio (about 1.5 hour flight, about R$150 in August).
