Trip to Mynamar alone

Hi!!

I am travelling to Mynamar alone...anyone who has been there can tell me if is there any problem? I have read that Mynamar is a safe place but I don´t know anyone who has travelled alone.
Also I would like to know if it is easy to travel without a fixed schedule and without all nights places to sleep already booked,
Thanks
Marta

Hi,

As safe as anywhere I have ever been. No real need to fix your schedule, no need to book all your nights accommodation. However it would pay to book Yangon before you arrive and then book ahead as you travel, your GH will assist. At the height of the tourist season of course it will be busy so if you travel during this period plan ahead a little more.

What time of year are you going? If you are going in high season, you will need to book accommodation ahead, as the country has very limited tourist infrastructure and there has been a huge surge in people visiting Myanmar.

Yes I have just travelled solo around Myanmar and I can confirm that it is very safe.

As for booking ahead, it depends on when you are travelling. I would book Yangon at least and go from there.

You're likely to meet other solo female travelers and it's easy to 'buddy-up' with others as you travel. But don't be too overly trusting and keep your valuables safe. On multiple trips to Burma it's rare to hear about harrassment of women.

I always travel on my own but never ALONE you will meet up with plenty en-route for meals and travel comp-anions on buses GH's etc to share trips with and make many new friends. travelling independently is the best and easiets way in Myanmar

just avoid the cockney speaking guide outside the royal GH in Mandalay, who promises to take you where no other guides goes and the sleazebag has a reputation for doing so too.
Again if travelling November maybe prebooking is a good idea for Mandalay and Inle

You mean that ultra-skinny, odd-looking dude? I saw him too. Didn't catch the accent, he was speaking in fluent Burmese.

Yes but his English is good and he has a cockney acent maybe through all the vulnerable 'Essex girls', he's "entertained" apparently when Essex girls buy they buy knickers from 'NEXT' they think its an invite.

Hello!

I am also travelling alone, 28 days starting december 30th.
I'm working on reservations in Rangoon and Nyaungshwe, but I'm also going to Mawlamyine, Hpa-An and Mrauk U. Last year, reservations were needed in Mrauk U/Sittwe, but do I also need to pre-book for Mawlamyine and Hpa-An? This would leave no space for 'errors' or the urge to stay somewhere shorter or longer...

just do it on the run when you reach aplace and are sure of when you are going to be in the next place that's the time to ring ahead, even prebooked they will resell yourt room oif you arent tghere the tiime you say and they panick if say they expect you 10 pm and as many do who prebook just dont turn up, when they haven't paid for it. I met a guy who made a habit of it at Ropyal hotel and because he turnbed up two days late expected his room and still refused to pay for the prervious two nights he'd prebooked

There are a few new hotels in Mawlamyine so I doubt that you'd need to pre-book if you're heading there.

These are the two new hotels just opened this year and the Shwe Myint Mo Tun is the first hotel in Mawlamyine with outdoor swimming pool. It's also conveniently located opposite the highway bus station and walking distance to the train station.

If you don't book accommodation and travel well ahead you will spend most of your visit trying to organise accommodation and travel :-)
Myanmar is full to overflowing with tourists, no sign it will slow down much even in the rainy season.

Really? Not even in the rainy season? Can anyone else corroborate that please? That is something I need to know about from someone who is there now, as I am leaving for Yangon in about a week....

Thanks

Jeanw, we did that last year, I didn't think of that as a problem. Hotels were very helpfull with arranging rooms.
