English Lads need help!!
HiWe're 2 English lads in our late 20's spending 15 days travelling around the south east of the US. We've both spent a lot of time in the States, previously in New England/New York/New Jersey coaching football (soccer) but we now want to come back and try out a different part of the US.
The plan is to arrive in Houston on 17 August and then travel to San Antonio, Austin, New Orleans, Memphis and then fly to Miami.
With regards to Houston (we'll be there for approximately 3 nights), we're looking for a good time, meet new people and see some decent sights. I wondered if anyone could tell us:
1. the best place to go out at night (bars/pubs);
2. any places of interest that we should see in the day;
3. best location to stay; and/or
4. any events on during this period (e.g. bar crawls, wine tours, music events).
Thank you in advance,
Justin and Matt

Houston on 17 August
You know that you're in for 35C (or more) heat and 99% humidity, right? Just so that's clear. Of all the cities with lousy summer weather, Houston's is the worst.
The general feeling on Texas is that Houston is less interesting than either Austin or San Antonio. I have not spent a whole lot of time in Houston, I'm afraid, so I can't confirm that.
any places of interest that we should see in the day;
The main tourist attraction in Houston is NASA mission control. Definitely go see that. You could also catch a baseball game: the Houston Astros will be in town that weekend. The Astros' stadium has a roof, so it'll be decently cool.

I've spent a fair bit of time in Houston and the consensus Mr Penney quotes is right.I like the musuem of fine art and the Menil collection, buit neither is worth going to Houston for. And nothing in the world would be worth going to Houston in August for. I've been there in May. I can't imagine August.
