Cambridge to Ely

Help me out with my alzheimers denial please.

24 years ago, I was visiting a boyfriend who lived in Cambridge, and we spent a day at Ely Cathedral.
In my head, we strolled along the river to Ely in the sunshine, wandered round the cathedral and then came home on the bus.

But I just took a look at Google Earth and its 15 miles. Hmm. Thats not right then.
So now I suspect that I'm mixing up two separate days, and that we walked along the river to Grantchester on one day, and went to Ely on the bus another. Sigh.

Assuming plate tectonics havent moved the two places 10 miles further apart over the last two decades, can anyone suggest a way in which we might have taken public transport to somewhere close to Ely (say between 3 to 5 miles away) and then walked from there? Is there anywhere that would fit the bill? Otherwise, turns out a treasured memory of a wonderful day aint a memory at all. Any suggestions?

Ely railway station is a bit out of the town and near the river - maybe you took a train there, had a walk and then headed into the town to the cathedral? It can't be more than a mile tops, though.

Waterbeach is on river, the way from Cambridge to Ely. 7 miles Cambridge to Waterbeach; 12 miles Waterbeach to Ely. Rail link between Cambridge / Waterbeach / Ely has always been good (about 4 trains per hour, taking about 16 mins Cambridge to Ely if train doesn't stop at Waterbeach), so I'd be surprised if you used bus in preference.

I recon your boyfriend slipped you a Rofie and you spent the whole day chained up in his celler and dreamed the whole visit... I think I've seen the video...

Hmmm - that might look like a worrying lunge into necrophilia.
