Visit to Greenland
I have extensive travel experience in India, China, where I can travel with little organized in advance. In my scouting for my Greenland trip (in July and August) I am surprised by the cost of the travel that the travel organizers are quoting in advance. Can one save cost by flying into Greenland and organizing the trip oneself, on the ground in Greenland? Thanks in advance for your insight.1
Unlikely. The travel infrastructure in Greenland is completely unlike that in India and China, so your experiences there will not help. The latter are teeming with hundreds of millions of people, many of them impecunious, and have surface travel infrastructure (roads and railways), and thus have cheap ground transportation services purchasable only locally. The former has 57,000 people spread across an area 2/3 the size of India, and practically no surface travel infrastructure. The only organised ways of getting around are in the very expensive air services, or in the few infrequent ferries, which are probably just what has already been offered to you already.

I would suggest to go to the East coast of Greenland. It is cheaper to get too and less touristy than the west. You can fly from Iceland to Kulusuk ( and then onwards either by helicopter or boat to Tasiilaq) or you could fly to the most northern part at the east being Ittoqqortoormiit. Air Iceland has some limited cheaper seats on their flights to Greenland. They also fly to southern Greenland and Illulisat in summer. We stayed in the red house when in Tasiilaq and they were very friendly but you could also camp and the red house runs several tours. We also liked Ittoqqortoormiit very much and stayed in the local guesthouse through nanu travel, the local travel agency over there.
