Buenos Aires -> Rio

Hi

A newbie here so go easy on me :)

Planning a trip in mid/late October, hopefully around 3-4 weeks, flying into Buenos Aires and leaving from Rio. Between the two, I'd like to fit in Iguazu Falls and Ihla Grande/Paraty. Apart from that, I'm pretty flexible.

Intrepid do a trip between the two, calling at the places above as well as a lot else - http://www.intrepidtravel.com/trips/GGRS. Although I've travelled a bit solo, this would be a pretty big trip for me so I'm undecided as to whether go solo and see who I meet in hostels etc once I'm over there or take on an organised trip like the one I mention above. I know so much is dependent on the guide/people, but I'm torn 50:50 at the moment. The organisation of a group trip such as this appeals to me and it seems to be pretty good value, but I'm worried that it may be too much and that I'd prefer something a bit more laid back. What are your experiences either of

  • this route and the things to do (or avoid!) along it
and
  • the age old organised trip vs solo travel debate?

thanks!

I think that the organised tours are a bit of a rip off TBH. BA to Rio is a well travelled route, and there are plenty of backpacker style hostels on the way. You won´t have any problems meeting people! The buses in Argentina/Brazil are much higher quality than you will find in the UK.
We´ve just done the same (ish) route in reverse Rio-Paraty-Sao Paulo-Iguazu-Asuncion-Rosario-Montevideo-BA. There´s a full write up on the link below.
In 3/4 weeks, you will have plenty of time. I reckon that you´ll have time to fit in parts of Paraguay and Uruguay as well, though others may disagree!

Thanks Peregrinef - that's good to know.

Enjoy the rest of your trip!
