A while ago someone on this forum posted a link to some of their pictures of cycling in Mongolia in late September into early October. Snow featured prominently in those pictures. After a while, they realised they could not continue cycling, and took transport. No doubt you could cycle down the main paved road from UB to China fairly late in the season if you could cope with the cold, but in much of Mongolia where the roads comprise marks on the ground where vehicles have passed and no engineer has ever sunk a spade, a normal bicycle could not easily be ridden once snow has fallen. As you can see, the average daytime temperature is already well below freezing in UB in Nov, and this is far from being the coldest place in the country.

Hi,September is ok in Mongolia, just the green is almost gone everywhere. I left Mongolia the first of October, crossing to Siberia, and it was quite ok. Cold but ok. It was 2009. I want to believe that things can be cold but rideable through October. Later, maybe not. Please, if you cycle there in November, let us know.
I believe this road is paved, but not sure. I never cycled this road in Mongolia.
Good luck,
Salva, in Guatemala now.

Most of the roads in Mongolia are unpaved. There are occasional patches of asphalt here and there. There are also many variations of the concept of" road".5
we've been living in Mongolia for past 2 years and the weather varies year by year. Our first year we experienced a 'Dzud'-natural disaster-super cold winter, and our second winter was not so bad, average minus 10-20, compared to minus 20-30 everyday in the Dzud! we cyled in October, but it was cold! Especially if you are crossing lots of rivers it will be cold. It is manageble anytime but can be a bit uncomfortable sometimes. it's so dry in winter that generally the snow is not hard to cycle through, but it can be very icy and slippery. Which Bulgan do you mean??Stay warm!
