Spain 22 August to 21 September including Morocco

Hi

My wife and I will be visiting Spain & Morocco between 21 August and 20 September. We are flying into Barcelona from Johannesburg and intend to spend 3 - 4 days in Barcelona. Thereafter we would like to drive South and eventually catch a ferry on 1 September to Morocco. We have allocated 12 days in Morocco and will then return via ferry, driving to Madrid and returning to Barcelona (all in all 7 - 8 days) for our departure flight.

We have seen lots on the forum regarding both Spain and Morocco but need some additional assistance on;

1. Accommodation in Barcelona - apartment or hotel between Euro 40 - 80 per night
2. Suggestions for the trip from Barcelona to Algeciras and possible overnight stops

3. The Morocco experience (we have chosen this leg to be well after Ramadan) - we will most probably be based in Marrakesh - good/bad idea

4. On the return leg we have allocated 3 days, possibly 4 to Madrid - comments and suggestions please

tks

Wim & Mari

1. Accommodation in Barcelona - apartment or hotel between Euro 40 - 80 per night

You can try to use this web to look for accomodation. Read the reviews available about each hotel to know what to expect.

2. Suggestions for the trip from Barcelona to Algeciras and possible overnight stops

Possible overnight stops will depend on the type of places you want to stop overnight (e.g.: Cities or Villages? On the beach or inland?...). It can also make a difference if you want to visit those places or if you only want to stop there overnight without visiting the city/town/village and/or its surroundings. If you plan to spend some time in the places you stop along the route, your interests will make a difference in order to know what places could suit you.

3. The Morocco experience (we have chosen this leg to be well after Ramadan) - we will most probably be based in Marrakesh - good/bad idea

You are more likely to get (good) answers about the Morocco part of your trip if you ask about it in the Africa branch.

4. On the return leg we have allocated 3 days, possibly 4 to Madrid - comments and suggestions please

That amount of time can be fine. Of course it'll depend on your interests and on what do you want to make there.

Do you plan to take a rental car on the ferry to Morocco. As far as I know it is not possible. You should ask the car rental agency what they say.

Tks for the responses.

1. Have been doing some research on hotels and apartments in Barcelona. Problem is to know which areas are good to stay in, being close to tourist spots but not in the heart thereof.

2. We will be driving down to the south and could do either inland or coastal. Any suggestions would be appreciated as we can spend more time focusing our research thereon. Since we have no fixed itinerary once we leave Barcelona, we could stay over and spend some time in the different places.

3.Point taken on Morocco - akana, tks for the advise. We will drop the car off before we board the ferry

4. Madrid - we are totally open minded. Would like to cram in as many experiences as possible

Viamichelin can provide you some ideas about road routes for your trip. Without knowing your interests/what are you looking for, that's the best I can make for you. If you want to tell us what are your interests (e.g. Beaches? Art? Nature?...), I could try to make more specific suggestions.

In Barcelona, you can try Gracia area for finding a hotel. As anillos_de_saturno have told you, check in the wesite he recommends you. And as he says, try to be more specific in order to help you.
It's going to be hot and wet in August in East Spain, Maybe it'll be good to stay near the coast to take some bath. If you want cities you can stop in Valencia, Cartagena and Granada. There iare some nice places on the way as Mojácar and Cabo de Gata and more relaxing.
Consider to cross to Morocco from Tarifa. It's nicer thar Algeciras by far and less busy. Then go to Tanger, Asilah, Chauen, Fez and Marrakesh. Marrakesh is very touristic but if tou want to go to the south-east area, it could be a good base.
