2/3 day trip from Gold CoastI am staying on the Gold Coast and have a few extra days before heading up to Cairns. Any advice on a possible 2/3 night trip for mid-wk by public transport. I like hiking, nature, outdoor stuff. Backpacker budget. Thank-you.

2I was going to suggest Lamington National Park (O'Reilly's)... Springbrook Ntl Park... Tambourine Mountain.... until I saw that you wrote "by public transport". Hmmmm...not sure how well you can go to any outdoor/nature places by public transport. There may be coach/bus companies that go there, but they won't necessarily be cheap. There's no public buses or trains going into those national parks as far as I'm aware.
Something that I have done with public transport is North Stradbroke Island. :) Hop on a train to Cleveland, take the ferry across to the island, and then there are public buses on the island. (Though service is not very frequent. But okay to get you around.) Accommodation options are camping (right on the beach as well!) or small cabins. If you like beaches and nature this is a good spot for you. The island only has three villages/settlements on it.

3Getting around the Gold Coast beach side by public transport is great but like other have said public transport inland is virtually non existent. North Stradbrooke would be a good choice but to get their you need to get to Cleveland which would mean getiing to Brisbane first. You would spend half a day just getting to the ferry via public transport.
Another alternative might be South Stradbrooke which is smaller than North and you could spend the day walking around it and I belive a ferry still leaves form the Gold Coast. Don't expect any facilities as the main resort when into liquidation few months ago and I belive the other resort was closed by the council. Lots of wildlife even wallibies I seem to remember last time I was their (4 or 5 years ago now).
Other alternative is oragnized trips which go inland but expect to pay appox $100. About the only place inland public transport might get you is Mt Tambourine and their are quite a few walks their.

4Public transport really limits you to getting in and around the Gold Coast, or near Brisbane. You can get transfers on shuttle to places like the hinterland, Byron Bay, even Noosa. If it were me, I'd be looking at taking some sort of transfer to the hinterland or Byron, and just spending a few days there.

5O'Reilly's sounds ideal-----phone them-----they have single person rooms and if you explain your situation they may suggest a way to get up and back and even a package deal. I know there are day trips in private buses, but if you want to stay longer they will know how you can do it. If that idea doesn't appeal, there is sea kayaking from just near the Broadbeach YHA just down the road from Sea World, and snorkelling out to see the turtles from Coolangatta Dive. There may also be other day trips or 2 day trips from the hostel----phone them and ask. Good luck!
