Ideas for places to visit in Bangladesh in June/July?

Hi,

I will be traveling in Bangladesh for two weeks with a friend in the in the last week of June and the first week of July. Initially we thought that we would take the Rocket down to Khulna and then join a trip to the Sundarbans from there. This ended up being not as easy as we thought, since there seem not to be enough people interested to arrange a trip with one of the tour companies. So we have to resort to plan B...
we are still interested in taking the Rocket down to Khulna and possibly go explore Bagerhat and arrange a day trip to the Sundarbans from Mongla from there. And then we need a few more ideas...
we are mainly interested in going around in the Khulna, Rajshahi and Dhaka divisions. Does anyone have any ideas of places that would be of interest to visit? Somewhere where we could see crafts being made would be fun, a museum, etc. would be fun!
Considering that we will be traveling during the monsoon season, what is the best way to travel (road/rail/air)? Also, is the Rocket a good travel option during monsoon season?
Since we will be staying in Dhaka during our last days in Bangladesh, ideas on daytrips in/around Dhaka are also very welcome!

Best regards,
Margie

Rocket is always a nice transport for relaxing journey. So, you can take the trip. But now a days as Rocket does not go to Khulna you can do :

  • Get off Hularhat at 11 a.m and take the bus to Bagerhat. Visist 60 domed mosque then head to Mongla.

  • From Mongla arrange a day trip inside Sundarbans. While negotiate, please ensure to go till Harbaria because almost day trip organizer go only till Koromjol which is nothing but to waste of money. You contact with Mr. Ferdous of Manager of Hotel Pashur at Mongla. He can help you to find such a boat trip.

Other hand, if you want to go Rajshaahi, then oroceed as under :

  • Take Rajshahi bus and get off Puthia to visit palace and toms in that area then head to Bogra. Visit Mohastangor, Paharpur and then go Rongpur/Dinajpur.

  • During moonsoon you can use train (where possible) or bus but avoid small Lonches (Boats)

Dhaka Side trip : Sonargaon is the best place for day trip.. Also can think to go Dhaka (Pottery village) and Savar (Snake village)

Look up the Urban Study Group. They lead (or led, I left Dhaka over a year ago) walking tours of Old Dhaka which are pretty cool.

  4. Puthia - A land of fine temples and Palace.
