Should I make an itinerary?Hello all!
So I've finalized my ticket to South America, leaving September 4th for Ecuador, then to Peru and Bolivia later on.
My original plan was to "drift" down to Bolivia, basically just going wherever I felt like going at the time, and making a general path southward. However, reading through the forum I've noticed that many many people are asking about advice for itineraries, and I'm so I'm not too sure if my idea is very valid.
This is my first big trip so you could say I have no idea what I'm doing. I won't be pressed for time though, I'm going for 3 months.
My question is, should I make myself a more detailed itinerary than "go downwards"?
And if so, Should I specify only regions/cities, or go into the travel details of how I'll be getting there?

2#1 has it, spot - on, and Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia in 3 months is more than comfortable.
Don´t plan too much - but don´t drift aimlessly !
Do a bit of research into the places in each country you´d really like to visit, and throw together a ´rough ideas´ itinerary (don´t bother with too much detail at this stage - but include your budget if you have one) - then I´m sure the kind and gentle folk on TT will be only too glad to offer their comments and suggestions.

4As per the above - make sure you have an idea of the general places you want to see and the order of them, so you don't waste time & $$ backtracking. Contrary to the above, I would say 3 months is a pretty short amount of time to see 3 countries, so it would be a good idea to work out a rough timeline, or you'll be one of those people asking us the cheapest and fastest way to get from, say, Cusco to La Paz when you realize you've wandered too much and run out of time, and need to rush down to La Paz for your flight home :-)
Once you know your parameters, you can 'wander' with more confidence - knowing that by spending more time in one place, you'll have to sacrifice time you were going to spend in another... If you had 6 months I would say you needn't bother, but with 3 it would be a good idea.

5sorry for the late response I haven't checked my computer in a while.
I think I'll definitely be taking your advice, because it seems to be unanimous. I'll create a very rough path for myself and travel along that instead.
While we're on the subject, and if anyone is still checkin this thread, are there any "must sees" that you would recommend?
And in regards to Machu Picchu, I think I'll be doing the Huayna Picchu trek instead. From what I've read its more accessible, cheaper, and more importantly it isn't overrun with tourists such as myself.
