North-Central Vietnam - a couple of questionsDear All,
Hoping for a bit of advice/commentary to help with planning my forthcoming trip to Viet-truckin'-Nam - a country I've fallen quite in love with over the past couple of years:
I will be travelling southwards from Hanoi in late June-early July this year. Will most likely be on a moped (have clocked up over 2000 km in Vietnam on previous trips, so have an idea of what to expect) so travelling light, with a fairly flexible budget. Having mostly spent my time in the southern and central areas before, I'd be gratefull for any guidance re. the following:
1) Weather: I know climates change and weather can be vastly different from year to year but what should I expect, roughly? Have endured plenty of warnings re. the rainy season, as well as a lot of positive feedback (fewer tourists, rain mostly of the "intense but brief" variety, plenty of sunshine), so am interested in what those of you that live there/travel frequently in those times of year have to say.
2) Beaches: the LP seems to be pretty damning in its assessment of the beaches in that part of the country. Are they really as bad as all that? If so, are there any rivers good for swimming in (one of my best memories about the last trip is splashing about in a river on my way down the mountains from Dalat)? I'm not very demanding, so not looking for the "everything catered for" conditions of Nha Trang or Mui Ne (in fact, the opposite would be better) but is it possible to find a place for a dusty traveller to dip his belly...?
3) General: any suggestions of where to go/what to see are, of course, greatly appreciated. Obviously the guidebooks help but personal experience is often much more accurate. Any reccomendations for places to stay would also be of use (as mentioned, budget isn't really an issue, particularly as I've found US$15-20 hotels much more pleasant than most of the higher-priced ones).
Apologies in advance for the waffly post - habit, I'm afraid. Again, many thanks in advance.

1Thanks ecotravel! Glad to hear the weather should be good and thank you for suggesting the beaches - I have marked the ones I didn't know of on my map.
I will have about 25 days in Vietnam on this trip and will spend them mainly around the north-east coast, I guess (it's the area I have not spent much time in previously), probably between Ninh Binh and Hue, with a few days visiting friends in Hoi An.
