Cuba Answers: Caribbean Transfer Card
In the name of providing honest information about a very important topic to we Americans, permit me to correct some inaccurate and misleading statements in a recent thread about the CT card.I went through Jose Marti last trip in a moment when it was ten times more packed with agitated folk than I have ever seen it in 17 trips. I understood why it took me almost 25 minutes to get my new CT card. The lady who could provide it to me was buried in an avalanche of tourists. Two hours ?
Note you must use all that you deposit whilst in Cuba or leave any residue until a later trip!
Do you have to save all of your CUC for a "later trip"? Are you unable to exchange it back to your currency of choice? Wouldn't someone who suggests they now have a CT account be aware that the CUC there could easily be converted to any other currency at any time the account holder wished to do? Why would someone suggest otherwise? Makes a fella think, donchathink?
Why, moreover, would someone continue to suggest that losing $5-7/$100 by bringing USD cash to exchange for CUC in cash, was a six-of-one, half-dozen-of-another sort of an option, as though the two choices were at all equal?
Why would someone who insisted that they would never leave their home country without "5 or 6" debit cards suggest that the CT card, the ONLY debit card option an American has was.....................
"a hassle"
Fifteen minutes online and you pick your card up at the airport. That's a hassle?
"expensive"
The CT card is FREE yet it provides you with
1. the best rates for USD to CUC conversion available, FAR better than bringing USD cash.
2. the ONLY method for an American to get extra cash while in Cuba
3. the safest and securest way for an American to deal with their money while visiting Cuba
4. the most efficient way to get cash. No lines at banks or Cadecas. Just spend 30 seconds at an ATM.
5. the most locations where it can be used than any other option. Over 8000 at last count.
Why would anyone want to so obfuscate such simple and clear facts?
I leave the answer to you, dear reader. As for me the answer is as obvious as the smarm in which such deceitful retorts are penned. It's one of my favorite little latin quips from law school...........
res ipsa loquitor
the thing speaks for itself

CT has a web based calculatorhttp://www.websophie.com/
punch in how many CUC's you want & how you wish to load (Online/Mail)
Load Via Mail - 9% over the amount needed in CUC (over $1000) - Load via Intl Money Order or Cashiers Check
Link a credit card, for emergency funding,
Need $500 CUC because you have 3 days left in cuba, and your running low on cash? You Pay $572USD get $500CUC , avail in 24hours!
For an American this is truly the best option. US Banks block all transactions in Cuba,
I will be traveling in July will be using CAD>CUC and CT Card

Damn, wnyz, you're a step ahead of me, and I'm supposed to be the smart ass on this one..........jejejeje.Seriously though, thanks for making us all aware of this new feature. Let's kill this concept of USD cash as being any sort of a viable option. Adding that calculator that includes the Money Order option rates will save me a lot of cutting and pasting in the future.
Now we are told that we just have to be careful not to leave any CUC in our account because we won't be able to exchange it when we leave............LMAO. Of all absurd and inaccurate pronouncements made about this card, that one takes the cake!
Adding that calculator that includes the Money Order option rates (and I assume that includes Cashiers Checks as well) will save me a lot of cutting and pasting in the future.

The CT card is great but wasn't there a recent report of someone waiting two hours for the card after arrival? I can picture that happening - the traveler's first lesson on the speed of life in Cuba. And I don't think that possibility would stop me from applying for one, I'd be grateful for the full disclosure.4
Would you ever travel to Cuba without the CT card, patricia?I think the broader question is why an Australian and a Canadian would pretend to tell American about a subject they have no use for, and why, when they do so, it always has a negative connotation and is misleading?
I would never chime in if what they said was accurate. It never is.

My two best friends........jejeje What a surprise they would take the time to respond.......LMAOIs saying No minutes to 2 hours honestly representative of the wait time when 99% of us report it as more like 10-15 minutes? I think not, but I will give you that distortion, based on an extremely rare incident that would be more honestly presented as the "exception that proves the rule" of just how efficiently the process works, rather than as a negative about the card itself, as was presented here.
Note you must use all that you deposit whilst in Cuba or leave any residue until a later trip!
Are you, as a self-proclaimed card-carrying member of the CT club, ready to explain to us why you would ever suggest such a foolish thing? That is as ridiculous a supposition as one can imagine anyone ever making about anything, methinks. One might have to assume it sprang from either ignorance (surely not the case with as esteemed a gentleman as yourself), or a desire to distort. Are their other options about how to read that? If there are I would love to hear them.
What combination and quantum of the elements of cash (e.g. CAD or USD with its extra 10% charge), Travellers Cheques or Credit/Debit cards (in your case CT) is most viable depends on a number of factors including trip length and time/ hassle involved in acquiring those elements. Ultimately your decision nmv(don't we all lol!)
Please elucidate for those of us unable to grasp the nuances you elaborately (if non-specifically) so clearly seem to understand and bounce about, how any of those variables might factor into any Americans decision about how to deal with USD and Cuba.
Rickie.............ju got sum 'splainin' tu do..............jejeje Not worth a response
Let's get personality out of this so important issue..............PUHLEEEAZE
Let Americans with actual experience with our ONLY option for the safe management of our money in Cuba, speak to this simple issue. Why should anyone else care?
