Yes it is safe , stick to the main tourist destinations, don"t travel after dark, avoid Managua and don"t share taxis with locals in Managua if you travel from one busstation to another ...happy travels....4
you will be fine. listen to globaler and all will be okay, although some of the non touristy places such as esteli, miraflor, tisay, matagalpa, and jiquilillo beach are my favorites in comparison to the main touristy towns of granada, san juan del sur and las penitas. so plan ahead and be travel smart. there are lots of solo female travelers in nica and you may be alone at first, but after a night at a hostel, you'll have a travel buddy in no time.Edited by: esperanzas

Yes, if you don't act stupid.Avoid Managua.
Avoid walking alone after 9pm.
When using taxis always check that they have a red-rimmed licence plate, if not they are fake taxis. Sneaky theft is your main worry, so don't flash valuables and do not wear any jewellery.
Be the least easy target. Thieves are like predators and pick the easiest target. You'd be surprised how many stupid tourists play with their iPad on an outdoor terrace right on the square where beggars and homeless people sit and watch them.
Buses are very crowded, so hide money and bank cards underneath your clothes, and keep a hand on your day bag/hand luggage.
More safety tips on my website.
Indeed, how safe is Chicago?? Or Rome? What is safety? People die in car accidents in Europe every day, and women are raped all over the world. Just don't go looking for trouble by getting drunk or wandering around at night or getting into fake taxis.
If you make certain precautions a habit, such as in a cafe: always keeping your bag with valuables on your lap or between your feet, instead of hanging it from the back of your chair... in the street: wearing your bag with the strap diagonally across your torso... then you won't need to be paranoid, and will be able to simply enjoy the many beautiful places of Nicaragua, and its friendly people.
Have fun! You will find my photos here.
