New York Hostels

I am struggling to decide on one of two hostels to stay at: Chelsea Highline Hostel and the Hostelling International New York. They both get good reviews and I am trying to weigh up the benefits of each.

Which area is better/safer/closer to attractions?
Chelsea Hostel: 184 Eleventh Avenue
Hostelling International: 891 Amsterdam Avenue New York

I will be travelling alone and I am generally worried about safety and the security of my valuables. At first, I was very apprehensive about staying at a hostel because I like my privacy and am worried that I might end up with a few unruly travellers who come home drunk at all hours of the night etc- which is why I like the Chelsea Hostel because they offer cheap single rooms. However, I also realise that my fears might be a little excessive and it would be good to meet new people. I like Hostelling International because they seem to be REALLY popular and get hundreds of good reviews.

Which Hostel would you recommend based on location/safety or any other insight?

The one on 11th Avenue is in a more interesting area but the one on Amsterdam is closer to the subway.

In NYC it doesn't matter because attractions are all over the place.

We stayed in the Chelsea Hostel (many moons ago, before it was renovated) and the area was good, and we visited the HI on the Upper West Side too - and while it is true that everywhere is more or less close to everything else via subway, I would recommend the Chelsea one - you are significantly closer to a lot of stuff that will probably interest you.

@ianw6705 - would you recommend the Chelsea hostel?

We are in our 50s, and we survived it. It isn't as spread out and amenity-driven as most HI hostels, but it was okay. Rooms were small - but there weren't any rats or cockroaches or anything. It was very social. I think they do have single rooms - if the idea of a dorm bed doesn't appeal to you.
