want to buy a campervan London Jul 2012

I am looking to buy a campervan in London mid July to take on the Europe circuit.
Any ideas on where to find one..heard there is an unofficial market in London on weekends but dont know where it is. Happy to agree to buy in advance if anyone has one to sell about that time.
Cheers
James

you often get people advertising them in TNT magazine-a weekly freebie you can pick upoutside Tube stations or try looking on their website too.

Do you really want to drive a R/H drive campervan around continental Europe?

Hi *matuszek. Welcome to Thorn Tree.
I hope you have a very happy and long stay here - with us all.
Few pointers....
Have a look on T.T.'s Stuff For Sale Or Wanted branch. It often has some goodies.
What *2 - donsky suggests is full on. RHD in Europe, especially for the inexperienced - can be nasty.
Not all people have a problem with RHD on the right, but many do.
I'm a regular driver on The Mainland - and still don't like taking my RHD car over.
Admittedly, there's nowhere in Europe where it's easier to buy a S/H vehicle, than in The UK.
However, there are pitfalls.
Good luck with everything.

easy to buy a vehicle in the UK. Very expensive to insure; you are talking thousands of pounds.

Not necessarily. Depends on actual make, age, licence, value of vehicle etc.
It's will certainly pay to shop around - though.

In Germany try researching this link to give you an idea on prices:
http://www.mobile.de/?lang=en
It has info in English on all makes from very low to insanely high prices.
For VW Buses search under T1 T2 T3 T4 = newer models

Autoscout is the same in France if you can get across the Channel.
No translation to English tho...

I've had friends who have had some rubbish experiences with privately buying camper vans, in one case the drive shaft fell out in the middle of Rome and the gearbox followed. If you don't have much mechanical knowledge it could be a horror show. Another friend bought one from a car yard in London and didn't even make it to Cambridge with it but they gave him his money back.

I wouldn't buy one from the side of the road, the comeback would be almost zero.

Google Translator will sort it, in a couple of seconds.

I did this in 2010 and at the time we found that the market (supposedly originally in Islington and later near Caledonian Road) was gone. Try Loot, Gumtree, Ebay, Autotrader, plus there are various campervan sites which sometimes have them for sale (campervanlife, motorhomefacts). There are a few dealers around London too but they charge a premium. Lots of dodgy vans/sellers out there so bear that in mind! If you can I’d recommend looking early (ie now) – July is total peak and vans get snapped up very quickly and get more expensive through spring.

Two good sites you might find helpful:

http://europebycampervan.com/van

Good luck.

You could possibly even try hiring one for a longer term and they would come preinsured?
This site, Camperbug has a number of vans listed. You might find an owner who would give you a van for a few months.
