I get hit with a $7.50 "overseas transaction fee" each time I use an ATM off shore - for this reason ,I always withdrawer the maximum amount at any one time.

Carry enough cash on me for the day. The rest is stored in the room safe, or in the money belt, if I'm on the move.

Yeah, that's my point ..... hitting the ATM every day / second day .... those fees add up. Also, in certain places there seems (at least reports of) greater risk of fraud etc when using ATMs .... so I try to use them as little as possible.
I try to look ahead to see where I can use credit cards (decreases need for cash) .... but again, depends on how much fees are involved.

Clothes with secure pockets where I keep a copy of passport, some money and one card. Money in small denominations that is easily accessible, and the rest in a more secure place.

I usually have my small camera with me too, but I also make sure that I upload the photos from the camera on a regular basis. Cameras are replaceable - the photos on them are not.

iPod, wallet with small money in pockets

Money belt with passport, big money and documents

Daybag with cheapo camera etc

The only time it changes is if it's raining heavy or I'm feeling paranoid so I'll put the iPod in a bag or something.

This has been a really useful thread thanks. I was wo during what to carry with me. I plan to lock my backpack in the room when I go out (I bought a Pacsafe). But wondered what to take out with me.

During the day I'll have a day pack with purse (money, cards), cameras, iPhone and passport. I was wondering should I pack a bag to take out to restaurants in the evening? Just a small one as I'm wondering if I'll look sillyl going to a bar/club/restaurant with a backpack?

Also do you strongly recommend a money belt? I've never used one before.

Used one once.... Never again.
Zipped inside pockets are the solution for me.

I won't hold much, maybe a few hundred pounds as I have a great bank account with free withdrawals worldwide.

Well....even a few hundred pounds,if you are walking around the back streets or through the markets of Caracas or Nairobi,is a lot of money.

Where are you going?

My feelings are - once someone bad spots you opening a money belt, you're a target.

I'd wear a money belt in crowded places/cities/markets/bus stations etc. in Guatemala,Mexico,Ecuador and Peru.

Its true what Billy says though...I wouldn't open it in public.Carry a little money in your purse or pocket and most of it in the money belt.

Try not to carry all of your cards on you. If you separate them at least if something unfortunate happens you don't lose all your cards.
