Uganda

Hi. I just wanted to have some input from more experience travellers. It will be my first time travelling outside North America. Is it better to apply for a tourist visa in advance from Canada or directly buy it at Entebbe Airport? My gf's brother-in-law(who is American) always bought the visa at Entebbe Airport but something tells me it would be wiser to apply to the High Commission first. Also, can anybody give me an idea of how much a 8-10 days in Kampala could cost me please? Keep in mind that I will stay at my gf's place so I wont have any hotel or restaurant fees to pay. I also wont leave Kampala safe to go from and to Entebbe Airport(I'm not going on any safaris or other similar activities). How much money is considered as sufficient funds and what kind of documents the custom agents want to prove that I have sufficient funds? Thanks.

You will get the visa at the Airport on arrival.
You will need a few dollars for pocket money.
You can consider visiting happening places like Ndere troupe dancers, national threater
and buganda road crafts shop.
500$ can work for you

I don't know if Canadians can get a visa on arrival, but if you can, it's really no stress at all - the airport folk are very friendly - as are most Ugandans, so why you want to just stay in at your girlfriend's house, not seeing any of the tourist sights and not even going out for a restaurant meal (!) is beyond me.

What does your friend think about this, is she really prepared to stay indoors cooking your dinner for 10 days? (Somehow, I think not!)

However, these prices are accurate as at Jan 2012:
Beers 3000-4000Ush each, sodas 1000-2000, a newspaper or a postcard is 1500.
Public transport between Kampala and Entebbe is 3000Ush each way.

No one asked us for proof of funds, don't worry about it - but please consider actually seeing something of the country while you are there!

You can get your visa right at the airport - no hassle - very quick and friendly - you do not have to have proof of funds either - and get out there and enjoy Kampala!! Have fresh tilapia on the shores of Lake Victoria - beautiful! the Ndere troup is amazing - food for the most part is excellent - and reasonable. Have fun!

Dear Jawa33

That's a good point - Kampala has a great nightlife and lots of restaurants so make the most of them. you can also do plenty of daytrips: Kampala city tour, Jinja for white water rafting and a visit to the source of the Nile, birding, golf, a visit to assess Ssese Islands, Mabira Forest, fishing on Lake Vic, visit to the Ngamba island chimp sanctuary. All of these are within a few hours drive of Kampala.
